Direct connect LAN without internet?

So I plan on playing command and conquer generals zero:hour offline with my buddy. We each have got ourselves a windows xp and each the same version of the game. We have a router and or modem (not sure which) and 2 straight ethernet cables. Is it even possible to play LAN with these few materials? The modem or router is just an old exede router

Yes, as long as you're both on the same subnet and the game supports LAN and has no Internet required to play it should work.

Depending on how the client works you could possibly do it directly P2P and omit the router but the router will make things easier with DHCP & such but if you didn't have one handy it's possible you could do it without.
