Affordable PSU

Probenja

Hi guys, this is my first post on linus tech tips forums and i wanted to ask a question. A year ago i decided to upgrade my pc and the only things i left from the old one were the PSU and Case, both are chinese unbranded cheap stuff but they still (kinda) work, few months ago the PSU started to make a horrible noise when i booted the pc so now i decided to change it.

I read online and i decided to go for a Corsair PSU but i am between the cx430 v2 and cx430m, i know they are the same but which one would be more reliable because the modular version has more parts that can go wrong, right?

I also read that the VS series has very bad reliability and i should stay away from it, is that really truth?

Thanks for your help and i promise to be more active now that i am a part of this forum.

Either of the Corsairs would be plenty reliable.

Also, EVGA makes some nice psus in the 500W range

Welcome!

Either of those would work fine. The modular is better for saving space inside your case. They have the same points of failure as a cable breaking on one will have the same impact as a cable breaking on another  :P

Well i have a cx 430 non modular version and it works fine. I'm assuming that the PC that you are gonna power is not that demanding if it's running a non-brand PSU. The other thing to consider is that if you go with a cx430W you will most likely be limited to a single low end GPU like in my case HD7770 for future upgrades. My point is if you are gonna upgrade to a mid range GPU with a standard CPU and 1-2 ssd-hdds you will most likely be limited by the PSU. Having said that there are people that are using a 270X with that PSU no problem. If you wanna up soon , go for 500W or something (depends on the upgrade ofc). If not, the non modular one is excelent. Modular for me is just for conveniance, do it if you want it basically.

I'd consider a bigger one since the 430 has only one 6 pin connector, so you'll have trouble for future GPU upgrades.

who cares...

Thanks for the fast replies, i guess i'll go for the modular because i am a fan of having a clean looking system. and yes you guys are right my pc is not demanding and if i ever put a GPU it would be something like a hd 6670 to make crossfire with the integrated graphics. (no i don't game a lot). And i would be selling it on 2-3 years time to get a laptop, but i still want the next owner to have a reliable pc.
