I am now currently using the following components in my build:

a) i7 4771 (non-K) intel chip running at stock (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EUTW24E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1),

b) ASRock Extreme 9/AC motherboard (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DII658M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1),

c) 32GB (4x 8GB) of Corsair Vengeance Ram (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006EWUO22/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1),

d) EVGA GTX1070 Superclocked (https://www.evga.com/products/specs/gpu.aspx?pn=81e0fb30-3f35-469c-b0c5-548cf1de28d7),

e) Samsung 840 Pro 2.5" 256GB SSD (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009NB8WRU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), and

f) 850W CoolerMaster Powersupply (http://us.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/powersupply/silent-pro-m/silent-pro-m850.html).

I have other components as follows:

g) Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512 GB (As current boot drive),

h) Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1 TB (As a storage drive),

i) 4x Samsuung 2TB drives (was part of a formal array but it has completely crashed and not in use), and all housed inside:

j) Cooler Master Haf X (http://us.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/case/haf-series/haf-x.html).

Would like to have some advice for a new built (Budget = US$1,500.00) for 1080p gaming.  My primary screen is just the 24" Prism X240 (144 Mhz refresh rate) screen.  I do hookup the GPU (EVGA GTX1070) with 3x 24 Inch screens (75 Mhz refresh screens).

My usage will be as follows:

a) Work like Microsoft Excel, Word, Office, etc. etc. (using 4x screens as mentioned above for work purposes),

b) No content creation (like video and etc),

c) No streaming while playing games, and

d) Gaming with 1080p with 144 Mhz refresh rate.

Any advice on what specs i should get?

Hello and Welcome to the Linus Tech Tips Forum.

I'd Recommend a Ryzen 5 3600 + B450 Tomahawk/B450 Steel Legend + 32GB DDR4 3600MHz Trident Z CL16.

If you want a 8 cores CPU, i'd recommend a Ryzen 7 3700X with a X470 or even an entry level X570.

16GB is more than enough, but if you want it, 32GB will be overkill.

Hi Gabriel,

Thank you so much.  But wont the 3700X or the 3800X be a better choice?  Looking to have some future proofing for at least 4 years.

As for motherboard, I think I will keep to the 16 GB at the moment.  No point building a Ram drive.

For X470 or X570 drive, any recommendations between MSI/ASUS/ASROCK?

Thanks.

For MSI if you're looking to get a X470 i'd recommend a X470 M7 AC, its the Flagship motherboard. Gigabyte in my humble opinion, the only X470 that's worthy is the X470 AORUS Gaming 7 Wif, ASUS i'd recommend a X470-F Strix or the Crosshair.

Asrock, you should be fine with a X470 K4, but i'd consider first a X470 Taichi.

If you want indeed a X570, i can recommend a few either.

Oh nice!!  Thanks.  Maybe in future when TSMC can ramp up production, can swap it out for a 3900X or 3950X just for kicks

If you plan on changing the CPU for a higher core count, than i'd really recommend getting a board with a better VRM, since as much core as you put in, the higher the current the VRM has to provide for the CPU, in some cases the 3950X overclock can use almost 170A-200A(Ampers) And most of the cost benefit X470 boards can't provide that, or can't efficiently cool the thermal dissipation from the VRM.

VRM are voltage regulator module, they provide clean energy(in current and voltage) for the CPU and other components like the SoC(internal graphics) the IMC(Internal CPU memory controller).

The better the VRM, the better overclocking you might be able to get, and more stable and efficient.

Since low end VRM might overheat and even cause thermal throtling.

Sometimes.  More in the future. There’s an argument, but mostly for futureproofing.  If you want to go down that road though the brand new 3950x is better yet.  More cores and more ghz

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

My recommendation for X570 woubd be these ones:

ASROCK:

AsRock X570 Taichi - US$295

X570 Steel Legend - US$195 (Cheaper and better Cost-benefit board)(Has a slightly simpler VRM but can easily handle a 3950X overclocked)

ASUS:

ASUS X570-F Gaming - US$300 (VRM almost identical as the X570 from AsRock using 50A mosfets)

ASUS X570-PLUS - US$165 (Good VRM, good Cost-benefit)

PS: The only problem with ASUS is that most of their mid-range and high end board are freaking expensive.

MSI:

MSI X570 ACE - US$340 (One of the BEST VRM in the market)

X570 AORUS ELITE - US$210

There are a huge number of ways to get these kind of information, but i'd recommend looking for VRM Spreadsheet, there are a lot of them around the internet. But personaly i use this one:

AM4 VRM Tier List - X570 / X470 / X370 / B450 / B350 / A320

PS: The only problem with ASUS is that most of their mid-range and high end board are freaking expensive.

MSI:

MSI X570 ACE - US$340 (One of the BEST VRM in the market)

X570 AORUS ELITE - US$210

I got a single problem with x570: those damn on motherboard fans.  Fans go bad, and when(not if) they go if you don’t notice your board dies. If you DO notice but they’re proprietary and you can’t get more, your board still does.

if there was a reasonably priced x570 with heat pipe/radiator instead of a proprietary fan I’d be all over it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Agreed, the good think about some of those high end boards are that they are passively cooled by a heatsink.

That's why i'd buy a X470. But if she still wants a X570 so be it.

hey guys!  what about storage (SSD)?

You also need an SSD?

What about a M.2 NVMe SSD?

How much would you like to spend on the SSD?

And how large it should be?

I think a 512 GB (M.2 NVMe) for a primary drive should be good.

I'd recommend then one of these following drives:

Samsung PRO 970 512GB - US$150

Read Speeds: 3500MB/s

Write Speeds: 2300MB/s

TBW: 600TB

DRAM CACHE: 1GB LPDDR4

Cell Type: 2-bit MLC(the best there is for a consumer SSD)

Samsung EVO 970 500GB - US$90

Read Speeds: 3400MB/s

Write Speeds: 2300MB/s

TBW: 300TB

DRAM CACHE: 1GB LPDDR4

Cell Type: 3-bit TLC

PS: I'd just recommend using then with a Motherboard that has a M.2 Cooling solution, since it can get hot, especially it the M.2 is located under the GPU.

I kinda like this.  NVMe is currently so fast the extra speed isn’t useful for most things.  That could change though.  Also the higher end boards (which you are looking at) often have 2 NVMe slots.  This means you could even raid0 them if even NVMe isn’t fast enough any more giving 1tb of fastest currently possible storage.

Argh.  This thread is changing my opinions on what I’m thinking about upgrading to after Christmas. Mo money mo money.
