Hi all! I've been an avid forum reader for ages, and finally decided to post. Thanks in advance for any advice. ?

I'm basically just trying to decide whether to rebuild my entire gaming PC soon, or just get a new GPU, and try to keep the other components going.

Online, I play things like Apex, and offline, most recently it was Borderlands 3.

I'm going to be moving from a 60 Hz 1080p 27" monitor to something with a higher refresh rate, but with the same size and resolution. So, anywhere from 144 Hz to 240 Hz.

My current desktop is as follows:

  • CM HAF X
  • Asus ROG Maximus Extreme IV
  • Corsair Dominator GT 16 GB DDR3-1866 Mhz
  • Corsair AX760
  • WD Green 240GB SSD + WD Green 2TB HDD
  • Intel i7-2600K (stock) cooled with a CM V6 GT
  • MSI GTX 1060 6GB OC

Option 1: I get a new GPU, like an RX 5700 XT, and keep everything else as is.

Option 2: I rebuild the entire thing, getting a Ryzen 3600, DDR4 memory, an NVMe SSD, and the same GPU as above.

I guess there's a third option of getting the GPU (since it'll be the same item either way), finally OCing my CPU, and seeing how things go, and then just adding all the other parts if performance isn't up to my expectations.

Essentially, if we put aside the immense speed boost I would get by moving to NVMe storage, this is a question about whether or not my 2600K (not overclocked) will bottleneck the new GPU. Replacing that would basically be the push to rebuild the entire PC. And a reminder that my goal is to continue playing new online and offline AAA titles at 1080p 144 Hz or above.

So, what do you tech wizards think? Should I get just the GPU, or sell my current parts and rebuild the whole thing? ?
