So my friend has a GTX 1660 paired with a I5-9600k and recently the 1660 stopped being the default graphics device while playing game and would use the onboard integrated graphics on the CPU. So I had him disable his I-GPU in device manager and do a clean install on his Driver and he was back to 60 FPS Ultra minimal CPU usage good to go. This was about a month ago, Since then we had to clean install the driver again to get any game to run off of the Dedicated GPU and no the I-GPU Fix the problem for a few weeks. Now its back again but this time Borderlands 3 and Overwatch run just fine 1080 60 fps ultra but some games like Fortnite, Far Cry Primal, and Apex Legends max out the CPU and don't utilize the GPU at all.

I'm thinking the GPU might be having issues either with power or just flat out bad and the I-GPU keeps defaulting while it has its moment of being offline and then the GPU doesn't take back over. If anyone has any other options before I suggest that he RMA's his card, I'm out of ideas since some games work and some don't

He probably has his video cables plugged into the motherboard.

Hi @Bullseye220

I had a similar issue with my Alienware laptop when I was trying to play games on the lounge room TV, as the HDMI output was set to use the Intel onboard GPU.

You need to change the machine's power settings to high performance, and also there are some settings in the Nvidia control panel that needed changing.

Under the Adjust image settings with preview

select > Use the advanced 3D image settings, option

select > Apply

Under the Manage 3D settings

select > Under global settings

select > Restore radio button

select > Multi-display /mixed GPU acceleration and change the setting to Single display performance mode

select > Power management mode and change the setting to Prefer maximum performance

select > Texture filtering - Quality and change the setting to High performance

select > Apply and save the changes

Under the Configure...PhysX

from the drop-down list of Set PhysX configuration

select > the Nvidia GTX 1660 graphics chip

select > Apply and save the changes

Exit the Nvidia control panel and refresh your screen.

Also, there are settings you can apply on a game by game basis if your friend has GeForce experience installed these will optimise each games’ quality and performance.

You can try this method. Under Windows setting, Go to System -> Display, then scroll all the way down and click the Graphic Settings. You should have the option to choose your apps and which graphic card you want to use.

Browse for the game (usually in .exe file). It will add the application. Once the game was added, you can select the option, and you can use which graphic card to run the apps. Since I have only 1 GPU, both power saving GPU and High Performance GPU are the same. For your friend's situation, you should be seeing the power saving GPU is Intel and the High Performance GPU is nVidia. Select the High Performance GPU and Windows will run the app using nVidia GPU.

Hope this help.
