Depends on the airport, and depends on which airline you fly on.

Most airports I've been in weren't free and no flight that I've been in has had WiFi yet

Will work for electronic components and parts

Some premium airlines such as Delta are offering wifi capabilities. The rules are still quite a hassle so don't get your hopes up.

Like many said, depends on airline. I'm also having long flight soon and I still have to double check if Finnair has it. Besides company it depends on flight type and even ticket type. I suggest to check with your airline before or at counter.

If you're in Brisbane, Australia there is no free wifi at the international airport...not exactly sure why but there are internet kiosks that you have to pay for. I haven't been on that many airlines but I do know that Cathay Pacific and China Southern doesn't have wifi on board. Hope this helps.

Yes almost all air lines have wifi on board theses day's, it is not free to use though, prices range from $5.95 to $12.95 for most airline carriers, there is a way around paying this, simply look for people from the air line you will be flying with, they usually hand out free wifi pass cards  before loading time. I fly all the time and have got several of the free wifi pass cards, the cards only work for that flight only though, so if you have any layovers, the next plane you get on, the pass card will not work, you will have to hope that they will pass out the pass cards on that flight as well.

British Airways does have WiFi - but exclusively for 1st Class and Business Class passengers (although how they manage to restrict the WiFi signal to just those areas of the plane I have NO idea lol) - and they charge a pretty penny for it too. I don't understand why airlines STILL insist on everyone turning off their electronic devices during take-off and landing though - there have been TONS of experiments done to find out just how much they can interfere with flight controls and flight systems and NONE of the experiments actually discovered ANY interference whatsoever! (which isn't surprising as the only systems that even COULD be affected - the wireless air-to-ground signals and such - are on frequencies totally locked out to commercial products). It's not like the manufacturers of aircraft systems aren't testing their products to make DAMN sure they don't get any interference from devices passengers might use.

I know this is a bit off topic but I've got a couple of friends going through flight school at the moment and they ask you to turn off all electronic devices during landing and takeoff not because of interference with the plane but as a safety precaution. If they have a failed takeoff or landing, a loose iPod classic in someones hands or an 8 pound laptop suddenly accelerating rather rapidly towards someone can cause serious injury. It's actually quite logical.

Ok that I can understand - but why don't they just SAY that during the announcements? They're STILL using the age-old excuse "it can cause interference with flight controls/systems" which is an outright lie. I'd much rather be told the truth - that if you're using that heavy and rather blade-like MacBook Pro and the plane crashes during take-off, it could slice someone's head off. Although, perhaps not quite in THAT graphic a detail LOL.

I check with Finnair site and they don't have WiFi, not even on new Airbus A330 & 340. There is option to use satellite phone for email and sms but cost is $2 per message. Not worth it unless you life or job or maybe lovelife depends on it.
