Hello everyone, i have a couple questions regarding mobo and cpu upgrade..

Im currently rocking a pretty cheap and old gigabyte 150 mobo, and i7-6700.

I have a gtx 1070 and im playing on 1440p.

When monitoring my cpu and gpu use, i can tell that while most of the time my gpu is on 100% use, my cpu will sometimes also spike to 100% and i do see some drops in fps. I would probably wont be upgrading my gpu until next gen, and was wondering if:

1) will ryzen 5 3600 be a good investment for the next few years, Or if i should save a bit more for the 3700x.

2)will getting a b450 board be a bad idea? Ive never used any features of high end boards nor was i attracted to them, im asking for future' sake. Will i run into any predictible problem with b450 board running next gen gpu?

Thanks in advance!

1. Question :

If you're just playing video games and not rendering or cad designing the Ryzen 5 3600 is enough for you , but if you're planing to render i would take the Ryzen 7 3700x.

2. Question

I'm currently using an B450 motherboard and it's enough for the new Ryzens , but you should watch look for the "RYZEN 3000" mark on the motherboard's webpage.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I will only be gaming, maybe some coding but no editing. Was asking more because of "only" 6 cores.

Regarding the mobo, i know i have to look at the compatability, but i shouldnt run into any problems with next gen gpus, right?

You won't run into next gen gpus , but you're unable to use the "new"  PCI Express 4 connection. But I think that isn't so important , because your gpu will always work and detect the version of PCI Express that you are jusing. So PCI Express 3 will work just fine for new gpus.

The 3600 will get the job done just right for 95% of all gamers, paired with a good B450/X470 board and it will work just fine.

MSI make boards with Flash Bios button that allow you to update bios without anything but power on the board, so that come in very handy when you buy a board not updated for 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs. The MSI B450 Tomahawk is a solid choice, the Pro Carbon is very good too but a little more expensive.

Main System: Ryzen 2700, Asus Crosshair VII Hero, EVGA GTX 1080ti SC, 970 EVO Plus NVMe, Crucial Ballistix 3200mhz CL14, CM H500, CM ML240L cpu cooler.

Second System: Ryzen 2400G, Gigabyte B450 DS3H, RX 580 Nitro+, Kingston A400 SSD, Team T-Force 3200mhz CL15

If it ain't overclocked it ain't good...
