I have both.   The advantage of the rift s is the ability to adjust settings for the hardware in your computer. As for the quest it's the portability and no need for an actual gaming computer. My wife uses the rift s when she's at her me. The quest she takes to school and her parents house.

I am looking at investing in a vr headset and am wondering what one i should purchase the oculus rift s or the oculus quest

i do have a computer capable of supporting the rift s

gtx 1660 ti and a ryzen 5 3600 16 gb ram

what would you recommend

Get the Rift S. IIRC the Quest is standalone, whereas the Rift S uses your PC. You'll be able to play more on the Rift S with your PC than on the Quest by itself.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

They're going to make it possible to connect the Quest to a PC soon though. But the Rift S should generally still be a little better when PC-tethered.

I know it's possible already through software such as RiftCat, however you've gotta have some damn fast wifi, and it costs money. The same software can also be used for connecting your phone to your PC to use with something like google cardboard vr.

I tested it a little with my phone (I don't have a VR headset or google cardboard or anything). Tracking was a bit buggy, and the resolution was pretty low. Not sure if was just my settings, or how the Quest would fare with it.

Not to mention the Quest only has about 2-2.5 hours of battery life. Not sure how the whole Oculus Link thing is going to work out. If it'll be able to push the full 2880x1600 (1440x1600 per eye) resolution @ 72Hz, as well as charge the Quest and keep it powered during use, I might advocate for that over the Rift S for a few reasons...

The Quest has a higher resolution (1440x1600 per eye opposed to 1280x1440 per eye on the Rift S), OLED displays instead of LCD, hardware IPD adjustment, and the ability to play unlinked from the PC if desired. The Rift Quest does have 72Hz displays instead of the 80Hz of the Rift S, though I'm not sure how noticeable that change will be. I have very briefly used the Quest and it felt fine to me. It also has one less camera than than the Rift S, but I'm not sure if that will affect tracking much or at all.

On the flip side, if the Oculus Link can't deliver full resolution or keep the Quest powered during use, then I'd just go with the Rift S.

You're forgetting the advantages the Rift S has over the Quest. The biggest pro of the Quest disappears when you connect it to a PC.

Higher resolution isn't quite that great when it means you need more compression; and it leaves out the fact that the Quest is PenTile, so you have fewer subpixels than expected.

That said, it's not like the Rift S is hugely better than the Quest as a PC VR headset. I just still think it is better. Quest, on the other hand, has the potentially huge upside of also being usable standalone. And if you have an IPD outside the range of the Rift S, that's another big reason to go for the Quest.

Can't wait to try Quest Link.

If it works as good as reviews have been saying then it should be the ideal thing in my opinion as long as you value the standalone usage a little bit.

I do, it allows me to play some stuff while travelling and without bothering with cables, can use it to just watch movies in bed etc...
