Hello All:

It is coming tax refund time in a couple of months and I am thinking of upgrade at least 1 component in my computer (see signature below) minus the Graphic Card because that is something I cant afford to upgrade, Unless I can find a better one at a cheap price. So I am asking for suggestions as to what you all think I should do to make my system a little better. Please do not ask what I am willing to spend because at this time I don't even know.

So things I was looking at is going from a CPU to a APU. Another is maybe changing out the ram from 1st gen G.Skill Trident Z to Trident Z Royal. Or maybe even changing the motherboard although I think my current one is still pretty good (just recently upgraded to latest BIOS). So what do you all think I should do. And let the suggestion begin.

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair VI Hero, CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, Heat Sink: AMD Wraith Prism RGB, Video Card: FTW GeForce RTX 3080, Memory: 4 x G. Skill Trident Z RGB Royal 8GB (total 32GB), Power Supply: Thermaltake Tough Power Grand RGB750W, MonitorAOC Q32G1WG4, HD: 2 x Samsung EVO 850 and 4 x Seagate 2TB ST2000DL 003-9VT166 SATA HD, Keyboard: G. Then we can't recommend anything meaningful because at this point your system is both CPU and GPU bottlenecked in games, if not memory as well since you didnt specify frequency and CAS latency

Dumb, even slower

Purely aesthetic based, unless the frequency and timings are different which you again have to specify

For gaming you spent way too much on the board and storage tbh

I think your system looks great as it is, but perhaps max out the CPU the mobo will support?

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Then obviously you're better off waiting until you can put money toward an upgrade that you -   a. actually need    and    b.  will see a real difference from doing.

All of your upgrade ideas sound like someone looking to burn money and just wants something new just for the sake of doing it.  Your reasons for upgrading need to start with a target, something where you can't run a game at the fps/quality you want or need more from some other component.

To Everyone:

If I have to put a price to something, I would like to keep it under 300 dollars.

To Jurruino:

Sorry about the memory. It is 2 sticks of G.Skill Trident RGB 3200 1600MHz DDR4 (16-18-18-38). The CPU is a Ryzen 5 1600 at 3400MHz.

So going to an APU would not be a good idea, then maybe a newer generation Ryzen would be better.

To LogicWeasel:

Right now my card runs everything I play so I don't really need to upgrade that, mostly because of the price of cards now a days. Yes I can save the money to do it but like you said, I am mostly doing it for the sake of some thing new. I like the looks of some of the newer RGB thins out there, yes I like RGB, and I want to go over to those things.

How does talking about:  changing the CPU to an APU (downgrade) or changing out a motherboard that already has RGB to something else  ... help you get more RGB things?

The motive for the upgrade still feels more scatter-shot than focused on anything clear.  Not trying to tear down your ideas or post, but it's very hard to give a clear recommendation when so far what you've posted is more spitballing ideas you might be into (but the focus keeps changing), frankly something I cannot help you with.  I'm much more used to an upgrade advice thread where either the budget and motive is clear, or a user is checking for bottlenecks or next-steps.

I am not saying that I need to get more RGB things (although I do like RGB things) but changing out my Current CPU for a more up to date CPU would be considered an upgrade would it not. Say going from a Ryzen 5 1600 to a ryzen 5 2600 would be a move up would it not? Or going to a different motherboard that has more features than my current, would that also not be an upgrade. Now since I am the sole supporter of a family of four on my paycheck, it is hard for me to save money to get what you would consider a worth while upgrade. I have to do mine in small increments on a budget I can only really afford once a year. So I have to pick and choose what I want to change.

So let me ask you this question. With the budget I stated above, and you had my rig but only could change 1 thing, what would it be?

I don't know what kind of games you play, but I'd be targeting a high-refresh rate (120+ Hz), IPS monitor then.  That was a very noticeable upgrade when I went for one, and I'd never go back to a 60Hz TN panel.

Then when budget allows, next would be a GPU upgrade, then CPU, in that order (unless other program needs like professional work or a game really stresses heavy cpu use).  The motherboard has good upgrade options as it stands so a future cpu upgrade just based on what's out from AMD now would be like a Ryzen 7 3700x.
