Samba is just SMB, the common file sharing protocol used by Windows. If you're using anything else than Samba you won't be able to communicate with Windows clients that easily, as NFS support is limited, FTP is unsuitable for large file transfers and mounting as a network drive etc.

 

What are you trying to achieve here? Are your clients all Linux, Windows, Mac, mixed?
