So a few days ago I let my computer to do a ffmpeg batch overnight as I usually do recently. I woke up the next morning to found out my computer won't turn on. At all.

Every time I pressed the power button it made a clicking noise on the PSU (normal thing btw on startup) then nothing.

I stripped the computer down to only motherboard parts but yep, no turning on.

Thinking my PSU gave up its life (FSP Hydro G) I borrowed a Seasonic something PSU from my friend to test my machine. But nada, still no signs of life.

So I'm curious-slash-frustrated, I checked the CPU and found two contacts on the CPU seem to be burned? I couldn't find anything the same on the pins of the socket itself.

So there are darkened marks on those two contacts inside the circle. Those two, nowhere else despite my bad photo take (I tried my best, sorry).

Also it don't spread out. I mean only at the gold thingy each and doesn't go outside.

Cooling situation:

I used to use Deepcool 120mm something until my CPU overheated and shut the computer down, revealing that the one of the Intel stock cooler-style mount pin has snapped itself. So I reverted back to Intel stock cooler that my 4790 comes with, and reuse the Arctic paste that still on the CPU when I installed that Deepcool (it was still thick).

It hit 97-98C during Handbrake and ffmpeg but other than that, including gaming, it never reaches 85C.

So when it did ffmpeg batch that night, it sunbathed itself for 4-5 hours continuously.

I mentioned that in case that's actually what caused it, or I'm just screwed in general.

So... help? Thanks.

Also sorry if there's a weird formatting. On mobile cause, y'know.

Well if pins are burned, that would be a power issue. As for what can cause that, probably a voltage spike somehow passed through the PSU.

The clicking you hear when you press the power button is probably the relay in the PSU, and when it doesn't detect a load it shuts down again. So it's very likely that if your PSU did die, it may have taken the MB and CPU with it.

It's odd the CPU socket does not look burned because they are usually more fragile.

Do you smell anything burned?

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

So I just checked the socket again just now. Well... there are some! Lower right area. It doesn't match with the area where the CPU's are. But there are some.

No burning smell on the day I found it, or just now on the board. Though I just sniffed the PSU, there's a faint burnt rubber smell. So I guess that's it?

You reckon that'll took the graphics card as well? Cause if that's true, well... I'm double screwed.

So I just thoroughly checked the socket. In addition to lower left area, there are other 1-2 burnt pins at some places.

I feel weird not noticing that before, but yeah, I guess the board is toast.

So I guess the current issue is: When the PSU died, does it take the GPU as well?

Not to bum you out, but typically a PSU failure of this kind, kills absolutely everything. It may not be evident at first. Like the GPU and RAM might continue to operate, but after X amount of time (when the card reaches a certain idle time, or load) it might just fail. It can also take out all the USB equipment if not optically isolated.

In general, if you're going to try and salvage this, test one part at a time. If a voltage spike killed the CPU, and only the CPU and MB, you get off lucky. If it killed the RAM and PCIe cards, that's unlucky. SSD drives might be completely erased if they are zapped.
