there is only,

  retail license

  oem license

  enterprise license

 

there is no such thing as free windows. attempting to use pirated versions will yes open you to infections as the windows 10 files could be modified to have a virus or malicious program in the files (its actually highly likely).

i will try and explain how a free "key" might work but impact your system negatively and expose you to threats,

 

retail,  are limited to a single activation and tied to your hardware after activation

 

oem licenses purchased online, act similar to retail and are limited to a single activation.

they are meant to be purchased when building a pc at discounts compared to retail

 

there is special oem license big system builders use, that dont need online activation. those are sometimes pirated and the boot loader modified to fool windows into thinking your system is one from the big system builders. this is highly dangerous to use as the boot loader has access to your system at a very low level. 

 

enterprise, multiple activation key or key management service.

 

multiple activation keys have a limited number of activation and if the key was to be leaked microsoft would know which company owned the key. the number of activations would be used quickly if distributed online and the company would have to explain how it got online.

 

key management service, allows activation across the LAN and must check in every 180 days to stay licensed. its strictly prohibited to host this on the internet.  you may find rogue servers online hosting KMS activation, they are probably running  hacked implementations of KMS server. connecting to these servers puts your computers security at risk, as you are exchanging information during activation such as your ip address and no doubt becoming a target for these rogue activation servers operators to attack.

 

just buy a license and dont risk your computer security. think of all the things you use your computer for and what would happen if the information was exposed, lost or deleted.

you can use windows 10 without activation aka FREE.

just install it and don't bother activation.

you cannot use personalization and it will bug you with a "please activate" reminder at the bottom.

if you're fine with that, everything else should run properly (including updates) indefinitely.

there is no such thing as a free edition of windows. if you read the terms of agreement inside the EULA it will state.

using the windows 10 without activating it, is contrary to the agreement in the retail license above. you would have agreed to this when you installed windows 10 without entering a cd key. the restrictions Microsoft puts on those who run their software without activation can change at any time (including updates).

Key is just string of characters it doesn't carry any other info. If you were to download something, thats different thing. Those can have pretty much everything, and you have no way of knowing it.

Any service can. Thats why you need to watch at your bank statements regularly. The service itself might not, but who knows who they share infos with. You can always do callback from bank side and get money back. But that will also blacklist you from using that service again.
