So my main objective is to extend my keyboard and mice away from the pc 3-5 meters to the other room. So I bought a 5m ethernet cable and cut it's ends and checked each cable in it ifmit had problems and it was totally okay. I used male and female usb ends and connected them to the cable. Aaand it only delivers power :) Soo I've read that usb 2.0 works up to 5 meters max cause of 1,5 ns maximum allowed delay thingy. So my question is if I short 1 meter of the cable so it becomes 4 ish meters, is it gonna work? Can we guarantee this or can there be an alternate solution. Thanks already :)

No, we cannot guarantee anything because that would imply 100% efficiency. If 100% efficiency existed anywhere in life, the robot overlords would have taken over already. That being said, you can try shortening the cable to see if it was the length causing the issue. Could also just be a problem with the way the cable was wired up by yourself - we don't really know.

The best alternate solution is buying a 10ft extension and plugging in your devices' existing 6ft USB cable to make 16ft total. You can also buy "active USB extension" cables if you need to go longer than 16ft, as these cables have some form of active power booster in-line with the cable, however, they don't work will all devices.

Electrical data cables are designed to minimize interference between the wires contained within. USB and Ethernet are designed to carry different signals. The Ethernet cabling might not be providing the right protections against interference or might actually be making it worse. Over short lengths it is probably not noticeable but at 5m it might be relevant.

Go ahead and try making the cable shorter. No reason not to try. I'm curious to know if it will work myself.

Well it's hella expensive that's one thing :D I bought this cable for something like a dollar and really wanna keep the price low on this quote "project". So there are USB repeaters on market too I knew them but they're really not an option for me. And oh I have a question for you guys which I wonder so much about charging my phone over this cable. I found out that it can carry soo less current and my phone was not really charging but slowly discharging, because it was on a negative total energy. Is it because it's 5 meters or because the individual cables in it are too thin (and they really are) and creating so much resistence? I mean sure resistance will drop the current but the thing I wonder is is it have anything to do with the fact that it's a long cable?

15 bucks is not that expensive, even for a broke college student. Just skip the morning coffee for a few days.

Why will a repeater not work? I don't think what you're trying to accomplish is going to happen without one or the other.

It simply will not work. You either need to get a job and save for two days, or rethink your whole setup.

Yeah I'll probably shorten the cable a bit. And one more question. Is this 1,5 nanosecond limitation someting can be changed? Because otherwise usb hubs technically will not work right? So is there a way to trick the computer to think that it is a usb hub and act accordingly? I believe there is.
