Raid 0, Multi SSD

Samsonite Bag
Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

Backup should be easy, and there are lots of programs to do this. Don't partition the backup drive, just back it up as one big volume

Id get a bigger ssd, like 2tb drives if you can

For raid, id use storage spaces, don't use motherboard riad here. Then you can also easy add more drives later on.

Hello, for my next build I am planning on getting a few 1tb sata SSDs and putting them together in raid 0. I am doing this to have a larger game drive. I already have an nvme for my os so I won't have to worry about that. About the drive failure part would it be sensible to have the SSDs backup to a HDD. HDDs are very cheap and I am planning on having an 8tb one so could I just partition it to the same size as the array and just back them up there? Thank you.

Thank you for the quick reply. I just have one question. Would it be better if instead of an 8tb drive, I just get two 4tb drives and have one of them as a permanent backup. This is because the 8tb is also meant to be mass storage, so thats why I wanted to partition it, Thank you.

Id get the 8tb and have half backup and half mass storage.

I personally don't backup games as I can easily redownload them but thats up to you.

If your storing other stuff on it, id make sure to back that up aswell, maybe to the cloud

I understand that, sorry for the confusion. I know RAID is a way to link up multiple of the same drives.

You don't have to apologize, just don't think that putting something in RAID is going to save your data. It's for hardware redundancy, not data back up.

As I said I understand. I am using RAID to basically mothball a few SSDs together for extra storage. I am going to be using a separate program for backing up data.

Unless you already have the ssd it would be better to simply buy larger ssd. There are 4TB ssd within a few $ of 4 x 1TB models.

For backup I'd suggest investing in a good backup package. Something like Acronis True Image which allows one to automate the task and limit the amount of storage consumed by backups.

You will want an hdd that is much larger than the data set to be backed up. This is to permit multiple backup generations. this is useful when recovering from issues that are not caught immediately.

It makes little sense to store backups on a unit that will also contain data included in the backup.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
