Motherboard shorting

Will I short my motherboard if one of the resistors is touching the case? My vintage case really limits my options for the standoffs...

It might not short the full bord but a portion of it. It the resistor is for CPU power, your PC might not boot at all (or your case might melt from the high current. Most cases these day have a spray painted coating preventing shorts

I am thinking of adding a padding between the case and the mobo. Will a cardboard work?

Yes, although conformal coating or electrical tape would be better
