Hi guys

Ive posted before about whether to get a 770 or a 280x, and i've come to the conclusion as to get a 770, but I have one last question.

Should I get the 770 now or wait for the 800 series, maxwell cards to be released? (I currently have a 560ti)

Does anyone also know any rough estimates of when the 800 series will be released?

Thanks Guys!! :D

I read something yesterday about how Maxwell will mostly offer power reductions. It's a die shrink...like Kaveri and Haswell...less power consumption, insignificant performance boost. Best bet, Kepler now. Performance boost comes with Volta.

It's just that i'm debating whether to buy a 770 now and buy a new case, maybe a motherboard aswell later this year, or buy the new case and motherboard now and just get the 800 series when its released.

@BigChimp97

It's tough deciding on upgrades. I have this kid texting me once a month. I sold him a 7970 and a monitor back in August so I could buy my 780. Recently he's been trying to work up a deal to get my 780. I could take his (my old) 7970 back + cash for my 780, which would give me room to upgrade my core system. For instance, I really want a bigger SSD and more RAM. It would be a 10-15% downgrade graphics wise, but my foundation would be stronger. He's also interested in my CPU and board as he's only running a very old Phenom. So, I have the opportunity to possibly drop graphics and go i5 and Z87 PRO. It's a tough boat that I don't wish anyone travel. I am interested in what the AMD and Intel fanboys would say.

If you have a solid card now, you could use the money to better your platform's foundation.

Thanks man, ive recently upgraded from my old FX-4170 chip to the new 8350 and its been a huge improvement, so i'm now thinking of changing case (for more airflow and sound reduction) and also my motherboard (just incase i want to sli in the future as my current mobo only supports crossfire, plus it would be easier to change everything over in one big go, instead of case one month and then motherboard the next). I know i need to upgrade my power supply from a 750w to maybe an 850w for sli, but that doesnt need to be changed until after i get a new card :) would you recommend i do this, instead of getting the 770 now?

The 770 now would be a better idea than having to change everything for SLI. I had the mobo issue as well. The slots were too close together to put non ref in Xfire or SLI. Luckily for me, the mobo was horrible and barely supported my 8350 so I upgraded. It scks having to change everything. I'm on PSU #2, Case #2, Mobo #3(2nd was DOA and I didn't even bother with a replacement), GPU #2 in less than one year. I noobed it up with my initial build. I mean it was fun swapping out parts and learning about new products, it was worth it.

Yer i'd be changing the mobo and psu for sli for my next card, i wouldnt bother with sli with my current card, as i may aswell just save up for the next one. Im thinking about getting the ASUS Sabertooth 990fx rev 2.0, is that a good choice from my ASUS M5A97?

That's a really good board with advanced OC features. The Gigabyte UD3 is a great board for the money. It fits any color scheme and is solid on lightly OC'd 8350s. The M5A99FX 2.0 PRO that I have is nearly identical to the Sabertooth for slightly less. There's a great OC write-up comparing the 2 boards somewhere. I just looked and can no longer find it. Sorry. It sucks this late in AM3+s life, with possible 12 and 16 core FXs on the horizon. Nothing confirmed, but 12 and 16 core Opterons were released last month. It seems, when it comes to PC hardware...as soon as you finally upgrade, the next best thing is confirmed.

Just found this one aswell :here:. I know that just going for looks isnt the best thing to do but i quite like the looks of the Sabertooth (I wont be oc'ing my 8350). I can afford the sabertooth aswell so its probably either the sabertooth or the one i just linked you :) which one?

If you're not OC'ing at all, then UD3 is more than enough. And is the best choice. If it's in your budget, then go Sabertooth, cause WHEN you decide to OC, it'll do it nicely.

Nice board and well rounded case. It would be like everyone else's 8350 build on the forum. So, it must be the winning combo.

I've started another thread about the whole motherboard situation lol, im definitely going with the Fractal Design case, ive wanted one for ages.

560 Ti -> Maxwell

I'll wait until the maxwell architecture is released, i'll probably go with the 870 or something, i think that if i bought a 770 now, i'd kick myself if the 800 series was released within the next 6 months

I wouldn't bother changing out your motherboard for SLI until DDR4 is out if your current board is fine and you won't be upgrading to SLI in a while anyway.

Though to be honest the AMD boards are pretty cheap so it wouldn't be that much of an investment and I'm not sure which AMD chips will even support it.

If your current card is doing fine I'd just keep running it. My dad still uses his 560Ti and it maxes out most things he plays, but he's playing on a 720p tv.

There will always be something better to wait for.

If you want/need the performance boost now, go for it.

Though I'd go for the 780 instead of the 770.

Same here. GTX 870 will be my price point. I hope Nvidia finally get's the drift and puts at least 3 GB VRAM on the 870. Nontheless i think it's worth the wait because Maxwell will be a new architecture. Even if maxwell isn't going to perform as expected, the 700 series and AMD's R9 series will experience a price drop after release in Q2/Q3.

who cares...

Yer hopefully! But it looks like ill wait until Maxwell is released because if I buy a new one now I'll be kicking myself later this year, that I didn't wait!
