Hello ,

i am a Videographer and i have a lot of 4K Videos, and i have a 4K BD Rip Movie files (with dolby Atmos audio). plus my personal photos and files.

I want to get a NAS but i saw that synology 918 is supporting 1080p only when i want to stream . the synology 418  on the synology website saying:(Stream video in its original format and resolution to DLNA devices.)

1 - so winch one is better ? or do you have any other recommendation in my case ?

2 - can i connect them direct to the pc using USB ?

3 - what is the best practice if i want to do video editing ? should i copy the files to the pc from the NAS then work on them ?

4 - can i use my phone to do auto backup to the NAS online ? and can i give a space to another users in the NAS to see only that space and back up his phone also ?

5- can i use OTP SMS for the NAS ?

6- i want to use RAID 1 . 12TB X4 Total (48TB) . what kind of model do you recommend?

Thanks so much :)

RAID 1 will mean you have only 12 TB of usable space, with the other 36 TB being identical copies of the data. Unless you need that kind of redundancy I'd go with either RAID 5 or 6 if you want to go the RAID route.

Errrmm, pretty sure raid 1 would make that 24TB usable space for the 48TB total disk space. But still seems wasteful to me anyways. OP don't forget that raid is not a replacement for having a PROPER backup of your data.

Hmm, I thought RAID 1 will always mirror a single disk across all and that you'll need something like RAID 10 to increase capacity beyond 1 drive.

IIRC raid 1 is a mirror, but can be of multiple disks, but I could be wrong... I might have been thinking of raid 10 I guess where the 2 disks would be striped first, and then that getting raid 1 to the other 2 disks.

Nope I was right the first time

RAID 1 consists of an exact copy (or mirror) of a set of data on two or more disks; a classic RAID 1 mirrored pair contains two disks.

To me this sentence reads as 1 disk of effective space and a copy of that data on the N other disks.

[edit] No, I was wrong, it would be RAID 10 to get what I was saying about... sorry.

I still wouldn't do that, it seems wasteful... I would go with a RAID 5 or 6 for some redundancy. Raid 6 would give you 24TB of usable space from 4x12TB disks.... and could recover from 2 disk failures. I would still have a proper backup though for the data if it's important to you.
