i5 2500 with 1866mhz ram

Good day,

I am upgrading a pc for my wife.

I am replacing the motherboard, adding more ram , and adding a gpu and psu( only a 350w psu came with the original pc). with a $250 budget.

It will be used for gaming.

I saw this motherboard. The reason I chose it, was because it supports PCe 3. And it was ITx

ASUS P8H61-I LX/RM/SI - LGA1155

It says it supports 16gb of ram. And it also says it can support 1866Mhz.

But now I am looking deeper into it. It looks like it the ram will not work.

I looked at another post.. Which said that if the ram is under clocked it will work.

I looked at the qualified vender list. And I did find 16gb of ram. BUT it is a 4x4 config.

And this MB only has 2 slots. Do you think it will work?

I could be wrong here, but this is a locked CPU and will require an overclock to run the memory at 1866, which I do not believe you will be able to do with that CPU. You will likely only be able to get the memory running at default speeds of 1333mhz.

Good spot. I can't remember back to that age, but if it isn't different than today, you can use a locked CPU with OC chipset to run above supported ram speeds. H61 doesn't sound like an OC chipset, so the result is the same.

from what I read, the IMC was a thing on the intel CPUs starting at the Nehalem architecture which is 2 generations before the 2000 series CPUs so it should be a thing.

It should also be noted that to enable PCI-E 3.0 functionality you need to use a 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) Core CPU, - the i5-2500 is a 2nd generation (Sandy Bridge) and will only allow PCI-E 2.0 mode. I only mention this because you listed it as a deciding factor. In reality, you're unlikely to run into the bandwidth limitation of even PCI-E 2.0 with that board and processor, and are likely to be using an equally modest GPU and standard SATA drives.

?⛰️? i7-2600K @ 5GHz / ASRock Z77 OC Formula / 32GB G.Skill DDR3-2133 ???

??? Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1080 / 2x2TB MX500 RAID 0 SSD / 50TB HDD ?⛺?
