Hi,

 

I am running a single m.2 SSD on an asus x570 pro mobo (970 pro, os drive). I know that the upper socket gets the lanes from CPU directly and lower from the chipset, but the lower one has the heatsink. it says nowhere in the manual about which one to occupy first.

Which ever is rated for Nvme speeds is the one you want to use. Usually the one closest to the CPU. Check your manual and see which is the faster slot, if they are both the same then it doesn't matter which it is in.

the heatsink doesnt matter tbh when there's a graphics card blowing air down onto it

My thinking excactly. the reason i'm asking is becuse I saw both Bitwit and Paul's hardware putting them down low in the builds.

oh it does matter, since the chipset has a max bandwidth as well. In other words, data transmission to multiple devices connected with chipset lanes will slow down when it hits the max chipset bandwidth.
