HP Probook 450 G2 won't show bios on second display

My HP Probook 450 G2 recently had a screen failure and I opted to re-purpose it as a computer for watching youtube on connected to my TV. I first wanted to reinstall windows but have been unable to get to the boot menu through either VGA or HDMI. However, windows will show up on the second display without issue. I've torn down the laptop completely, so it's just half the shell and the motherboard, with the main display disconnected, but it still thinks the display is there and I believe the boot menu and/or bios are appearing there instead of my secondary screen. Is there any known way to make the laptop realize that the primary screen is indeed disconnected? In the device manager I see a "Digital flat panel (1024x768 60hz)" along with the generic pnp monitor that is the second display, so windows sees it to but is smart enough to recognize both (on first boot it was mirroring, and I have since set it to display only on the second monitor).
