Doc2 - Mid Range Gaming Build

This is Doc2 a mid-range Gaming Build that I've built for our youngest teenaged child but It is being burned in running Folding at Home during the LTT Folding Month.

Chassis: Fractal Design Meshify C

Power Supply: Corsair CX450M

Mainboard: Gigabyte Aorus b450m Pro WiFi

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600x

Cooler: Wraith Prism from a 2700x

Memory: 2 x 4GB GSkill RipJaws V DDR4-3200 CL16

Storage: AData SU800 126GB m.2 SATA SSD

Lower Front Intake Fan: Noctua NF-A14 PWM

Upper Front Intake Fan: Noctua NF-A14 Redux 1500 PWM

Rear Exhaust Fan: Noctua NF-A12 Redux 1700 PWM

GPUS: EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SSC Gaming ACX 2.0; RTX 2080 Super Black

OS: Windows 10 Home; Ubuntu 18.0.4.3 LTS Desktop

The GTX has been moved to the PCIe3 x4 slot at the bottom of the board and the RTX 2080 Super installed in the PCIe3 x16 slot during the LTT Folding Month. The RTX 2080 Super is producing 2MPPD and the GTX 1060 about 450kPPDD and the CPU 60-80kPPD. The power supply has been replaced with a Corsair RM750X for folding month.

Note that conventional wisdom is to not use the PCIe lanes off the ChipSet to drive GPUs for folding but I've seen little to no degradation of points for the 1060 likely as it is pretty slow by todays standards and also perhaps due to Linux having better bus arbitration and lower utilization than Windows 10.

The final graphics card will depend on the kid's mid term progress report card. The mostly play MineCraft and ElfSword but this build is meant to provide a solid base for low framerate gaming for the next few years.

Update 2022.

This Rig has been going strong. Ended up with:

  • 2 x 8GB Corsair White RGB Vengence (mmmmmh Samsung B-die)
  • Replaced the 2600x (went into wife's gaming rig) with a 3600 when they were on a Fire Sale
  • Sold the GTX1060 6GB for $150 shortly before the GPU prices went insane 😞 and replaced it with a Gigabyte Radeon 5700XT Gaming OC that sucked at Folding.
  • Bought the poor under-privileged kid a 24" Acer Nitro VG240YPbiip 1080p 144Hz IPS Monitor and added a 2nd 24" IPS ViewSonic Tilt-Swivel Display.
  • Corsair Blue Gaming Keyboard
  • Cougar Gaming Mouse
