Hey everyone

I am looking into possibly buying a new gaming pc soon. I have recently moved to the US from the UK so I am not very familiar with all the stores over here so any help on where best to purchase would be great also. I have built a few pc's my last was a x79 3900k pc which was used for work and gaming. When i moved to the US I left that pc with my nephew so I will need everything to get started again, although I do have a copy of windows. Just looking for a gaming pc focusing on being quite and maximum performance, I no longer need a pc for work.

Budget is around $1500 for the rig but could be flexible, no budget set yet for the peripherals. Games I play/ want to play are mostly AAA games and the odd indie game. Looking to play games like the Witcher 3, Planet Zoo, Borderlands 3, GTA 5, Dawn of war 3 etc.

So far I have researched the following but any recommendations are welcome especially on the monitor side. Would Ideally like 1440p gaming above 60fps.

Total: $1340 excluding taxes

1tb M.2 should be enough for me right now and I can always add a sata SSD later if I need more room. Any suggestions or changes to the above would be helpful. I also need suggestions for a monitor preferably 1440p and gysync/freesync but open to suggestions. I also need a keyboard, I like the feel of a mechanical but I don't like to noise so an in between would be best.

Thanks

I'm not quite up to date with the GPU market atm (not sure what the best value in the upper range is), but I see no reason that you shouldn't be looking at a 3600/3700(x), especially since you plan on playing at 1440p. I would also recommend a higher quality PSU as I don't think that's that high on the tier list but I may be wrong.

edit: Nvm psu is fine, definitely still go Zen 2.

Around the same budget would be a Ryzen 3600 and a B450 Gigabyte Aorus board. With the savings on the board you might be able to bump up to a 3700(x).

The Ryzen 5 3600 is much better than the 9600k, the 3600 is pretty much on par with the 8700k and 9700k for a lot less.

Going with a Ryzen build and knowing what to get can get you a better CPU, GPU, Case, and PSU. You can also go for liquid cooling if you want that or just go for the DRP4 like you were, or don't spend money on a cooler at all because it comes with a very good stock cooler.

I dont know about that, in terms of gaming performance the 9600K still has AMD Beat with its gaming performance, but you get more stability with Ryzen due to its larger thread count, with games using them more effectively, if your looking apples to apples in gaming alone Intel has the better performing CPU on paper.

Also id like to mention if you go with Zen 2 there will be some bios flashing that needs to happen with any board that isn't an X570... Keep that in mind when purchasing a motherboard for Ryzen, if its within your budget, look to get one with USB Flashback as a feature, it makes the whole process pretty simple as you dont need to either purchase an older Ryzen CPU or deal with AMD to get a Cheapie to do it (this includes waiting for shipping from them, and it needs to be returned)

Edit : If you quote people, they will respond sooner as they get a notification :)

Anyone that has actually tested and used the Ryzen 5 3600 will know it's better than the 9600k which doesn't even have hyper threading, I've tested it heavily and the 3600 is a beast of a processor. 6 cores 12 threads, only about a 4% difference in single core(gaming) performance than the 9700k but the multi core and thread count is much better especially when you look at price. The CPU the 3600 runs closest to is the 8700k. It's just an all around better price to performance CPU, and I consider it a much better option over the 9600k as do a lot of others who have done testing on it and compared to the current Intel CPUs. Doesn't matter about what's on paper what matters is real world performance.

Also with regards to the B450 and bios updates, the B450 Tomahawk when bought from Amazon or newegg is shipping with the Zen2 update. Most of the popular B450 boards are shipping with it now that stock is coming back, the Tomahawk does have bios flashback built in as well. If you are curious you can also message the seller before purchasing a board to see if it will ship with support for Zen2 before you buy it. Most repair and service shops will also do the update for you for a small fee and even AMD will send you a bootkit  for free to get it updated if you verify your purchase through them.

I agree with you Ryzen is much better, but in benchmarks ive seen, the 9600k is a solid gaming chip, and thats where it ends really. The 3600 is more viable to a variety of different tasks as well as having a better set of features and the higher Core/Thread count is much more appealing to me (I have an AMD build) I was just playing devils advocate in the fact that if someone didn't give a crap about value and wanted the best gaming performance at that price point (if 4% meant anything to anyone) that the 9600K is good for those people.

that said i wasnt aware that B450's were shipping with the new bios, i bought an Asus Prime X470 for my build and i still needed to flash... thought it was the same with all boards. my bad :)

Thanks everyone for all the advice. One other question is with Thanks giving and black Friday a few weeks away is it worth waiting for the sales or is it traditionally not worth waiting for? I've not experienced US sales on pc parts before so just want advice so I don't waste money when I could easily wait a few weeks.
