Hey Linus Tech Tips,

Do any of you guys enjoy dumpster diving for computer parts that can still be put to good use and build new PCs out of them?  I remember my father and I built a machine out of scrap parts that we found behind a computer store that lets us rummage through their dumpster last year that had a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 1 GB DDR RAM, a 120 GB HDD, Antec 400 W PSU that we found, and an old NZXT gaming case. The old computer still works like a charm and runs Puppy Linux.  Do any of you guys have some stories about PC dumpster diving?

  • 3 years later...

I am in 9th grade and my friend father is

a custodian so once a week we go to the electronics dumpsters and find pc parts every time. My school has its own IT support that throws out 3-6 laptops a week and some of them has samsung ssd’s. So when i hear someone breaks their pc, i look underneath them to see if it has been opened. If they have been opened, they have a ssd, But they arent very easy to find since sometimes they are smashing the laptops before throwing them, depending on who throws them :)
