Processor Groups - EPYC 64 Core CPU

I was just watching one of the latest videos where Linus looked at the 64 core EPYC CPU. When he ran Blender, he was surprised that Blender only used half of the CPU cores, and attributed that to Blender not being NUMA aware. That's likely not what happened. If an application is not NUMA aware, it should still run across NUMA nodes, but it might not be as efficient.

 

Windows has processor groups for backwards compatibility. Back in the day, programs were delegated to using an API which returned thread affinity and usage as a 64-bit bitmask (supposedly due to speed optimizations, probably in the kernel). In order to support this interface, Windows has been splitting up processor thread above 64 into processor groups. That may also be why a 64 core EPYC processor sub-divides into two NUMA nodes. A processor group is a group of logical processors which will be accessible to an application using the legacy API. A processor using the legacy API will be stuck inside one processor groups. A process has to be processor group aware, and use a special API to be able to queue threads on more than one processor group.

 

So the 64 core processor under Windows will be split into two separate processor groups. Applications which run under the legacy API will be limited to the processor group in which they were started in. Linux supports up to 4096 processors in a system, and does not subdivide processor groups within that to my knowledge (they do not use a bitmask for affinity).

Good info. It's pretty silly in my eyes to run EPYC on windows as windows is so broken it can't even fully utilize it in many cases

I do believe this to be correct. While experimenting with GPU pass-though on my 1950X I needed to find-out which NUMA Node the slot the GPU was in was associated with but unfortunately when running lstopo everything showed up as one big NUMA Node.

 

The trick here was to change the default setting of Memory Interleave to Channel (in the BIOS). I don't understand it all myself but it had something to do with how the RAM gets assigned to each node and how it gets represented to the OS. By doing this each node and associated RAM are made transparent to the OS so it can see the independent nodes.

 

Something in there I probably said incorrectly but that was my experience on how to fix that issue.
