What a friend of mine did was buy a used 4U server from ebay, plenty of options to be had! Just really depends what your needs and budget is.

 

Something like this could be a  great way to start messing around with a homelab type of environment. You would likely need more RAM, but can run FreeNAS under ESXi and spin up other VM's next to that. Freenas for the NAS ZFS storage portion, and then really as many VM's as you want, RAM dependent at that point.

 

Actually, that particular one may not be a good options as I don't know what backplane it uses for the drives (if at all) and I am not sure about the SAS controller it uses. More research is needed if you want to go the Freenas route. But that is a good sorta place to start thinking.
