Plex skips on high bitrate content

Withenex

When I try to play original high bitrate content (around 30Mbps) Plex likes to skip. I looked at what the plex website had to say and they said it could be a memory limitation of the client machine. SInce it's direct play and no transcoding is being done(my server is already fast enough to encode any media on my server) and my network is already fast enough, gigabit on my server's motherboard, 100 megabit on my router (oof) i don't know exactly where the problem is coming from. I also have an identical server on my gaming pc since i haven't fully migrated to the new server. If i try direct play on the host machine with a web client on the same machine I still get skipping

does the content play properly if you download it to the local machine?

FYI if your server (Gigabit) is connecting to a Router via a 100 Mbps port, then your server is effectively now running at 100 Mbps. Granted, that's still enough to handle 30 Mbps - but you should really fix that. The easiest solution is to buy a cheap Gigabit Switch (Something like a TP-Link 5-port unmanaged Gigabit switch) - connect your Server - and all client PC's, into the switch, then use one of the ports in the switch and connect it to the Router.

On to your problem: What device or devices are having the playback issue?

The gaming PC is running Windows 10 I assume?

And the TV? Is it a Smart TV running the Plex App, or is there a playback device? Or is the gaming PC the playback device?

If it's happening on both devices, it's likely either server related or bandwidth related.

What's your CPU/RAM/Ethernet usage on the Windows 10 PC when playing back one of the high bitrate files? Go on the Plex Server and measure it's CPU/RAM/Ethernet usage at the same time.

My friend had this issue- for some reason switching to 5.1 audio in the Plex app makes the files play flawlessly for him. I have no idea why other than a possible limitation of the TV? Maybe something to try, though.

So choose a 5.1 audio track? I'll try it. EDIT: Nope, still skipped

Plex serving original bitrate content to my roku tv. cpu percentage, around 3% per core. Ram usage, 2.07 Gb, network usage, 39.3 Mb
