Im currently planing to set up and old computer of mine as a home server and also a file storage cloud using ubuntu server edition. i want to be able to view the data on it at home using LAN (not my limited data from my isp) and then when im not home i want to be able to view that same data from anywhere with a internet connection.

Can someone please advise me on how to do that. i have some experience in the linux terminal

Ubuntu has a cloud service pre installed, doesn't it?

Ubuntu One, but Owncloud would allow him to host his "own cloud".

You could also create acess it though a VPN, i have used OpenVPN in the past, worked quite well.

Signatures are stupid.

  • 1 year later...

OwnCloud does not do LAN filesharing (which is why I don't use it).

you can use samba to create a windows share (also works as an Active Directory if you want/configure it to)

then set up a VPN to access from somewhere else.

DO NOT PORT FORWARD FOR SMB

yes, that is an easy way to access your stuff from anywhere, but it is basically rule #1 in network security.

ESXi SysAdmin

I have more cores/threads than you...and I use them all
