Hi guys,

I'm going to study soon, and i'm in need of a laptop that can run a VM (maybe multiple but i don't know yet)

So now i'm looking for a good budget laptop (as i have 2 kids and a house to pay) , so i was looking for a decent 500-600€ laptop.

The school itself recommends a laptop with at least an i5, but they recommend i7 (or an AMD that is same as one of those). And at least 8gb (16recommended).

The options i have :

https://tweakers.net/aanbod/2081552/dell-latitude-5490-i7-8650u-16gb-ddr4-2400-256gb-nvme-ssd-azerty.html (second hand, 650€ :/) 14inch

https://www.campusshop.be/lenovo-ideapad-l340-15api-81lw005rmb/80054001/product/12248 (at the campusshop, but i dont know how long it's battery last, and how the cpu is) 15inch btw

https://tweakers.net/aanbod/2087534/dell-inspiron-13-5379-2-in-1-touchscreen-i5-8250u-16gb-ram-256-gb-ssd.html (second hand, 415€) but only 13,3inch.

https://tweakers.net/aanbod/2087476/2x-in-vrijwel-nieuwstaat-verkerende-dell-latitude-7490-laptops.html (This one is 600€ second hand, and is 14inch.)

Which one is the best bang for bucks?

You have two solid options (the used latitudes). Also check around for ThinkPad or EliteBook models. Lenovo, Dell and HP have online outlets where they sell used or refurbished laptops at massive discounts with full warranty

But yeah, grab a business class device and call it a day. The 7490 is an extremely high end device that is usually 1200-1500 euros new. That would be my pick I'd between those four.

Would that one be able to run VM's good?

Will the battery life also be good enough? (8hours prefered)

it would  be Fine with VMs.

Battery life while running said VMs would be hard pressed to get 8hrs. Plus since they're used, there's a high chance there's already some battery wear that will decrease battery life vs if it was new.

at 50% brightness while just doing normal websurfing it gets just over 9ish hours. anything more intensive (or having the screen brighter) will lower this number (plus what ever battery ware already exists)

And one of the other laptops, could they push more battery life? or probably not?

VMs won't be an issue but battery life will vary heavily by use. Good thing is, since it's business class, replacement batteries should be cheap and plentiful

Most likely not. The IdeaPad is a pretty low end device and likely has heat and power limits so that might make VMs a bit of a tough task. Same for the Inspiron. That's even worse.

Is there a way to let the seller check the battery wear of the laptop?

You can ask them but in most cases hard to do. But I'd take a slightly worn battery in a high end business class laptop over a brand new battery in low end overheating junk

Well he says they used them in his office.

So i guess they were connected to a charger most of the time, so it won't be much wear i guess?

https://tweakers.net/aanbod/2084338/hp-envy-x360-512gb-ssd-geforce-mx250-16gb-ram.html , i could get this one also.

It's still sealed, so new, for 600€.

Still go for the latitude? Or go for the envy?

It's a decent device. If it were me, I'd pick the Latitude but you wouldn't be disappointed with either one

But specs wise, which is the best? The HP or the latitutde?

Both should come with quad core CPUs. I assume the Latitude has a higher power target so more CPU performance but the Envy.has a dGPU in the form of the MX250 so if you need CUDA acceleration then that's a factor

Guess that's not needed for VM's?

Meh, can't see any reviews about that type :( so i can't see the battery life:/

Based on the battery capacity and that it's a 15.6" display, I'd say ~7 hours of light-moderate use is a good estimate. Could be slightly more, could be slightly less. Just my thoughts

so for battery life, i'd better pick the latitude then?

They'd be rather close to each other but the battery on the Latitude would be cheaper to replace in the future and much easier to find and install since many companies buy massive amounts of them. The Envy likely has a pain in the ass integration since it's a MacBook like device

So what would be the best bet?

Study is only gonna take 2 years, so no need to keep it longer than that.
