I know we have 2 forums for cooling but this question spans over the two and did not want to duplicate my question.

For these CPUs in the last 3 years or so, do they need water cooling or is air cooling ok? For my i7 extreme I have had for 6 years, it's been only air cooling... I dont do overclocking and do have heavy loads on it.

Seems water cooling is only to show off RGB stuff...??

In any event... air or water? And how easy or difficult is water cooling?

What about when transporting a desktop system? Remove the water or can I just move it as it is when travelling?

Thank you for your clarifications! ?

u could choose a kind of half way choice and go for an AIO.

Really easy to fit even for me whos had a minor stroke and has problems with right hand and arm.

liquid is better in max cooling power, but air cooling can cool even the highest end SKU at stock speeds if not overclocked a bit more with careful voltage control

Air cooling for me. Air cooling last longer and no leak or pump failure like AIO or custom water cooling. If we are talking about custom water cooling, then you are going to do a lot of researches for parts to fit in your case and style, and a lot of maintenance.

Aesthetics play a big role in the choice for a lot of people with glass panels nowadays (especially at stock speeds, where any choice has fine options, basic air coolers or small AIOs work on most SKUs just check TDP).  The custom loops are awesome looking but more for hobbyists.  The benefit you get from it (in terms of value per dollar and time put in) is dismal at best, being that a D15 can keep up and takes about 5 minutes to install.  All that said, if you are looking at that kind of cooling, it really is more about the journey (the building process and aesthetic end result) that people enjoy, and it being kind of an art piece.  Not that there is anything wrong with that, they look sweet as hell.

Some people love the looks of an AIO but they aren't necessary currently.  Admittedly, they aren't a difficult install at all, nothing like a custom loop.  A good air cooler (D15, U12A, DRP4) can keep up with or beat almost any AIO, and if they can't that AIO probably costs as much as a decent CPU themselves (compare enermax 360 AIO and ryzen 3600 new price, puts things in perspective) and are going to be doing some intense OC on a hot CPU

TL;DR, air or liquid is fine, both will get the job done.  Check the TDP on the CPU you are looking at and match it with a cooler that can handle that spec and you will be fine!

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks all! I Appreciate it. Looks like the fan cooling should be the way to go here. I dont care about the "prettiness" aspect. :)

Since there has been so much investment in the industry for water cooling, maybe its time to invest in AC cooling for CPU's instead of just a fan cooling....

There is a good video on that there is not a huge difference unless you go all out on either one. If you want simplicity then go for air if you want performance and style go for an aio. If you wanna go to the extreme get a custom water loop. At least this is how I break it down
