You need a means to protect such a valuable asset. You can budget in a mossberg 500, 590 and for entry level handguns ( 500 dollar price range ) you could opt into a cz 75 ( personal fav next to the single stack 1911's and the five seven which my state won't let me haz ) or a glock 17. 

 

I'm being serious. 

Glock 17 is good! I quite like the SIG P226. I recommend a concealed weapons permit if you go this route because if you open carry you're going to get the police called on you.
