PC upgrading 2019

Mr.Henry

Hello everyone,

I've been out of the PC upgrading scene for 4 yrs now and a lot of new stuff has come. I know there are guides out there and research goes a long way but I'm really looking to hearing your guys' opinions and suggestions on a couple of things. I've forgotten most of the stuff nowadays relating to PC parts and upgrading.

I built this current PC 4 or 5 yrs ago:

-Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

-Intel i5 4690K

-GTX980

-16GB of DDR3 ram

-After market air cooler for the CPU

-High quality Seasonic PSU, was it 650w or something. Anyway to check other than opening up the computer?

- and the motherboard was a gigabyte gaming 5 Z97X.

-Fractal design ATX case?

Back then Intel/Nvidia route seemed the best option but has that changed nowadays? Obviously I will need to upgrade my motherboard to accommodate a new generation CPU and with that I will need to upgrade the RAM as well. On top of that I'd be looking to upgrade the graphics card as well. What are the best bang for your buck options out of the gate? I love playing some demanding games and i'm looking to play upcoming games as well, so I'm looking for upgrades that would serve nicely the next 4 yrs or so. I'll be more than happy to offer any other specs needed.

Hello there,

Hmm kind of hard to give a budget but I know that upgrades like these are going to cost in the region of 1000 euros/dollars (easily). HDD, SSD, PSU (if wattage is sufficient), the case itself and maybe the CPU cooler.

From what i see you have headroom with your current build,

I would upgrade to a 4790K,overclock it and upgrade the GPU.

Yeah dude, that's what I expected as well. So to the main point, what would/could be the potential upgrades?

You really think this would be a viable option? given the hardware demands of games going up year after year. Although this would be a "cheaper" option.

This is what you can get if you just upgrade CPU, MB, RAM, and GPU

This is what 1100$ (~1000€) gets you for the whole system.

Finding an i7 4790K and overclocking it and getting like a 2080 Super, or even trying just the GPU, are also viable options.

I mean you could probably squeeze another year, maybe 2 out of it, if it overclocks well.

This is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm noticing my PC's hardware not up to the task anymore with games like BF5 and also with the upcoming cyberpunk game, i wont be able to run that. I've noticed that my CPU is the bottleneck nowadays. GTX980 still holding up pretty great even though that needs upgrading as well.

The top option seems very viable. I'm not looking to upgrade the whole system. How about my Seasonic 650w 80+ gold nowadays? Also, what is the general opinion on this CPU you are recommending? Also would a jump from 980 to 1080 be "too" little. You are suggesting the 2000 range from nvidia?

Perfect!

As for the CPU, i would go for Intel... i5 9600k and an Nvidia GPU the RTX 2070 if you can.

Look up the PSU model here, if it's B or above it's fine

Go with what @Epimetheus recommended - the RX 5700XT is better than the 2070 super.

The CPU right now is pretty much the go-to for 1440p gaming and productivity, with the 3600 being great for gaming as well

A 980 should be a 1660 grade gpu from what i remember, so the jump would be great with the 1080 too, if you can find it used. For the cpu, the Ryzen 7 3700x is a very fast 8 core 16 thread cpu. It performs pretty much on par with the 8700k-9700k while having more cores and threads. And i think the psu is still good
