Hey all,

My computer recently just shut down for some reason, and the motherboard refused to let it start back up again. I know I had kinda screwed the motherboard when I changed the BIOS with unofficial software a while back, so when it didn’t turn back on I wasn’t too concerned about replacing it. It’s an ASUS H(something it doesn’t really matter, MATX). So I went on amazon and bought a cheap used Gigabyte M310M A. I replaced the old motherboard and put the new in, put everything back together and BAM, the fans come alive for a second at most, and turn off immediately, no matter how many times i restart the computer I still have the same problem. I tried disconnecting my SSDs and optical drive, my GPU, and everything else non essential. I tried unplugging even the switch and jumpering the power connection to turn on the computer to the same result. At first I was thinking it might be a PSU problem, but then I realized the power does come on, is it possible it’s the cpu? I really don’t want to have to replace the CPU as those 8700k’s are expensive. Anyone have any suggestions to get my computer fixed without taking it in? I know how to fix things, and I’m quite handy I just can’t figure out what wrong! Thanks so much in advance advanced

i doubt this would be the problem... but an overheating CPU will cause the machine to shutdown (usually in about 10 seconds tho and not 1 sec).  You could reset the bios (remove the CMOS battery and put it back in and re-seat the RAM.  CPU could be bad, but I kinda don't think so.  send an update once you replace the  PSU

Alright I tried a new donor PSU again to the same problem. This PSU however does have a nice feature that allows force power for as long as you hold the button. The good news is that with the force power held down, the fans spun for as long as I held down the force power button, the bad news is that when I plugged in a monitor nothing happened. I didn’t hold the force psu button for long to avoid further damage, but it didn’t work.... I’m starting to think it’s the CPU and I really hope it’s not because I really don’t want to go out and buy another CPU from intel.

Yeah so I have an 8th hen 8700k and the ASUS motherboard i think I broke wouldn’t recognize there were fans. It also gave me warnings about no fans and stuff like that when I voted it up even when it was delivering power to them O_o. After the computer died and wouldn’t restart, every time the board was plugged to power, the orange strip at the bottom would stay solid and the heat sink on the board would get really hot. I left it on once for a bit and I smelled burning so I was just ready to get a new board. Maybe the old board fried my ram and cpu? Idk.

Ya that could be, it sounds like there def isnt any salvaging of the old board.  Do you have a frys or microcenter near you?  You could buy an openbox celeron or pentium for LGA 1151 (300 Series boards) and test the new board with a known good CPU.  If it's the CPU, I would suggest returning the 300 series board to Amazon and buying into another generation of Intel, go a little older for better pricing or newer for greating flexabilty.  8th gen seems to be fairly constricted in upgrades and Intel jumped to 9th gen quickly to keep up with AMD.  Try to tesr the new board to verify the 8700k is dead, also check your warranty on that, you didn't de-lid it or anything, right?

No the cpu isn’t delided but i have had it a while I’m not sure warranty would cover it. I’m probably going to switch over to AMD anyways because of price and Linuses video about how AMD will surpass Intel soon, so I don’t think now is a great time to but parts for my pc... with that being said I could probably again get a cpu on amazon and return it after diagnosis. I’ll look around and see what I can find. It’s too bad I can’t just get the damn thing to work....

def a lame situation, my brother in law just got an 8700k, so its still a super relevant CPU.  I would do whats necessary to verify the life of the CPU and then make a game plan from there.  But 3rd gen Ryzen is def tempting, if it comes to returning the board and buying a whole new platform.

The CPU is definitely a huge part of the build. I also just thought it might be important to note that I have an RX 580 GPU that I tried to use with he new board, even connected to power the fans didn’t move on it. I’m thinking I’m gonna get a cheap cpu from amazon, see if I maybe somehow I got a broken broad. Thanks for the suggestions though. I’ll also see if my cpu is under warranty.

@88pockets @xhackforeverxdx

Thanks so much guys for helping me. I got my Celeron in the mail today and put it in the new MOB and boom, it worked! Now this sucks because I now have a dead i7 which suck.... however it is covered under warranty so maybe I can get a replacement or something. I'm not sure how warranty works with Intel, but I'll be in touch with them to get this issue resolved. Thanks again so much I probably never would have tried an out of case build, or buying a cheap CPU to test the functionality (in my eyes anything below an i7 doesn't exist so I really never would have thought of that ?) so I'm glad I at least got some help figuring out what was wrong.

Thanks Guys!
