Start by making sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card and attempting to record your temperatures (CPU and GPU)
Which games are you running when it crashes?

First Build:| Gigabyte 990FXa-UD3 | FX 8120 4.0Ghz | Coolermaster Seidon 240M | Asus Radeon HD 7870 | Kingston HyperX 3k 120GB SSD + WD Green 2TB HDD | Corsair RM750 | 8Gb Kingston HyperX 1866Mhz CL9| Fractal Define R4 White/Windowed |

I use NVIDIA GeForce Experience, so I have the latest drivers according to that, my CPU runs at 39 C but I don't know how to record GPU temps, my computer crashes on most games, from Far Cry 3 to Civ 5 to Garry's Mod.

Is this a new build or is this a new problem?  Is that an idle temperature or a load one?  Hardware monitor can monitor all your temperatures.  You could try grabbing asus gpu tweak or msi afterburner and underclocking your graphics card to see if it's a stability issue there. You could try using prime95 to see your processor temps under load and ensure that it's stable (although its at stock frequencies so that shouldn't be an issue).  You could try memtest86 to make sure there's nothing wrong with your memory (this takes a while so I'd do that last).  It could even be a faulty power supply.

Generally if it's a problem with the GPU's frequency or driver, the driver or game will crash on occasion with out your computer turning off as well.  CPU/GPU/ memory problems will often cause freezes or blue screens rather than just shutting down your computer.

The more information you give and the more you try the easier it will be for someone to diagnose your problem.

even if its an unstable GPU the card itself should only crash not the entire system.

This is a new build, the one I gave you was from the BIOS, so idle. However, I get about 60 C while on load on my CPU, and my GPU gets about 30 C.

I literally have almost the EXACT same setup and am having the EXACT same issue; I have experienced while playing BF4.

Hardware: CPU: i5 4670k @ 3.4Ghz

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master N520

HDD: Western Digital Blue 1TB

PSU: Corsair CX600

MEMORY: Team Vulcan 2x4B 1600

GPU: EVGA GTX 660ti

MB: MSI Z87-M CASE: Rosewill FMB-01

I ruled out the CPU/GPU temp; during gameplay CPU stays under 50C and GPU under 65C.

I originally had an AMD A10-5800K, but acquired the GTX 660ti so I was fortuante to return my AMD APU and MoBo.

So I would says it's safe to say it's not temps, CPU, or MoBo.

Everywhere I've posted today seems to have the general consensus it's the PSU. Maybe the Corsair CX600 had a bad batch, or maybe it's something to do with the power the GPU is pulling.

IDK, but something is going on.

Please help us!

Also, no bsod, just looses power. All bios settings are pretty much default and set to auto. Intel boost is turned off. No over clocking except for the factory superclocked 660 ti. Could it bee too much amperage from the gpu? Is there a setting in bios to rule this out? I'm asking friends if I can borrow a psu to troubleshoot, but I may just exchange through amazon since I'm still within 30 days. Is there any reason the corsair cx600 would have incompatibility issues with the gtx 660 or what OP has?

I will check. Also, I forgot to mention. It only happens when playing newer more demanding games, and particularly during very demanding action where gpu and cpu are being stressed.

An actual shutdown is typically caused by the cpu overheating or the system thinking the cpu is overheating. Anything else usually causes a reboot.

Wouldn't there be error logs for that? Or any other tell take signs? I can promise I keep close watch on hwmonitor at all times as temps were my first concern. With stock cooler playing games it was getting upper 60s, so I got an after market cooler and literally not a single core has breached 50c since.

Also, when it shuts down, I have to flip the psu switch off then back on before it will come back if that helps. Event viewer only shows unexpected shutdown as well btw.

I wonder whether you have your temperature shutdown in your BIOS set to a very low level, or perhaps you need to disable it. Sometimes due to changing the cooling option on your CPU your CPU temperature warning and shut down limits get all screwed up because they no longer recognize the default chip fan which has inbuilt monitors etc.

Jump into your BIOS and check this out. Look for CPU temperature limits or something of that nature. If the event viewer isn't displaying anything than most likely its hardware or BIOS related, that's not to say however your PSU is screwed. Let us know how you go with the BIOS idea.

.

Everything is set to auto. What's an ideal shutdown temp? I kinda wanna just out 80 to be safe

What would be troubleshooting for that one?

Your temp monitor software should list VRM temp. You can also see what options are available for the BIOS settings of CPU VRM Over Temperature Protection and CPU VRM Over Temperature Shutdown.

If you can direct a fan to blow over the VRM heat sinks (between cpu and i/o panel, and cpu and top edge), or blow over that section of the back of the motherboard that might resolve the issue. (I had to do the later on an X79 motherboard to get VRM temperature down to a reasonable level.)
