RTX 2070 Coil whine

My RTX 2070 just started coil whining. Perfectly ruining my quiet system. Is this dangerous for the graphics card? Can someon explain to me what coil whining really is and if there is a way to reduce, or fix it.

Coil whine occurs when card is pushing high current through its inductors (Magnetic coils). They create this high pitched sound.

 

I haven't really seen anyone perform successful coil whine suppression because you have to figure out exactly which component is creating the noise and then apply some kind of sound insulator to it.  I might reduce the sound but won't get rid of it completely.

 

EDIT: Coil whine is not dangerous. Its a common thing among powerful GPUs.

I would run a db meter beside it and contact the company with the asking what the in spec db level of whine is, if that amount is less than provided I would RMA it.

 

note never volunteer your number until they say what it should be unless really pressed otherwise most reps will probably just say you are in spec, make sure they give you the number so you can provide your numbers if over, or say oh this is in spec then if not.

Coil whine is generated by vibration of one or multiple inductors. Each vibration is caused by a change in current draw, which happens multiple times for every frame generated as the GPU does different things in that time frame, hence higher frame rate increases coil whine

 

Only two solutions you can do yourself that might help. Gluing the whining inductor to the PCB with a lot more glue, or solder on more (a lot more) different types of capacitors to soak up the current draw swings. Neither are really feasible as they will break your warranty.

Supposedly some coil whine can be affected by the PSU, though it's a very rare case.
