Hi,

I'm planning to buy an external HDD with 1 TB storage, within my budget. I found these HDDs that meet my wishes of budget etc. Which external HDD you guys can suggest from the list below?

  • WD Elements
  • WD My Passport (it has password protection but I didn't like its appearance)
  • Seagate Expansion (some people say it's not a good brand, is it?)
  • Toshiba Canvio Basic
  • Apacer AC630 (has a waterproof and dustproof feature)

An additional question; if I buy an external HDD, can you guys suggest something about how can I prevent it from getting damaged from accidental knocks? Is there any external HDD cases?

Thank you, guys.

(Sorry for creating two topics on the same day with similar content.)

What is your use case? Different drives are better at different things. If you just want a 1TB backup disk, then any one of the products listed above will serve you well, just pick the one you like best. If you need speed or want to take it with you on-the-go, I'd suggest solid state storage, as it is much more robust.

IMO they're all more or less the same. I own a Toshiba Canvio and carried it with me for about 3 years with no issues. I've recently retired it as a daily driver for a large capacity flash drive since I don't really need that much space.

I don't think you can go wrong with WD, Seagate, or Toshiba, just get a cheap padded bag to store it in. There's not a lot of information out there on the Apacer so I'd probably stay away from it.

If you are super paranoid about breaking it then an external SSD is your best choice. These are much more expensive though so they may be out of your budget.
