a great video editor PC

Go to solution Solved by brob,

I will get a quadro not a geforce sice it is recommended by AVID.

The win7 ultimate was a gift so i already have it why not use it.

I've modified things as you outlined to fit the budget without loosing performance.

Since there is no GTX 780 gpu I've downsized the psu. It's still enough to handle the system with overclocking and leave room for another Quadro. I've also selected a different case. It has similar looks but is a little less expensive.

hi there, I am trying to build a video editing PC like the one in this link http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/74336-november-9th-ultimate-video-editing-pc-buyers-guide-where-to-buy/ by Mr. Tech Tips ( with only 2 HDD’s and the SSD ) but I have some problems justifying the 64 RAM, do I really need it?

A friend of mine is telling me to take the xeon E5 instead of the i7 what do you think?

I will use AVID with this PC, the OS is WIN 7 ultimet, 64 bit.

Thank you

whats your budget? 64gb is just over kill for editing you will only ever need 64gb if your doing super duper 3d rendering and such

this is my first super PC build, so the budget can go up or down a bit.

i will get 2 screens. so i am trying to lose a bit in some places to gane in otheres.

Any kind of budget is helpful, as well as currency.

for rendering it is recommended to get a 2011 chip such as my 4930K which has 12 Threads and is designed to do that and for rendering you might as well get a 780/780ti or go down AMD and get a R9 290 cause AMD are better at Open CL now

64GB of memory is a luxury, with video editing you should be able to get by easily with 32GB and could probably have a decently performing system with 16GB.

Why Windows 7 Ultimate? Why not Pro or Windows 8 Pro?

Xeon E5 is a more expensive platform so the real question is do you need the added performance and is it worth the extra cost? Note, a dedicated gpu would be needed with an E5 as none of them have integrated graphics.

If you are using Pro Tools 11 or Media Composer 7 a dedicated Nvidia Quadro graphics card is highly recommend by Avid.

I will make the same pc in the link, same cpu and all, some differences( i will use 2 HDD's not 4, i will not get the geforce card, will get 32 RAM and 2 screens).

Do you mean that you do not want a separate gpu or that you want a Quadro gpu not a Geforce?

thank you,

motherboard: why not the Asus P9X79 WS or the Asus P9X79-E WS ( i don't know what is the E for?). in my mind i want to get very high quality parts so they get to last as long as possible.

Case: I just want to fallow the tutorial to install it and I think with the Silverstone TJ04B-E I can install more fan’s that will mean more cooling?!

Seagate VS WD in the storage department. I lean toward the WD I think it has less problems.

Power supply: do you think that the 860 W is an over kill?

All of the parts will be shipped international so getting them from one place is going to be cheaper in shipping.

Do you recommend that I get an extended warranty on the parts?

The three motherboards are of very similar design and quality with the same memory and power regulation & distribution design. The WS versions are designed to support more x16 PCIe adapters. The E can support up to 7. The P9X79 has 3 x16 PCIe slots.

More fans does not necessarily mean cooler operation. The system as laid out is not tremendously demanding cooling wise. The Obsidan 750D can mount 7/8 fans (depending on size) and comes with 3x140mm. The TJ0BE can mount seven 120mm fans and comes with three. One feature I like about the 750D is its removable drive bays. This allows unused bays to be removed from the case allowing for much better airflow.

I have had more success with Seagate drives so I tend to recommend them. Both brands are reliable units for this type of build.

I do think 860W is far too much. Even if it were not I'd recommend a different psu from the Ultimate Video Editing build. Likely a Corsair AX860 (not i) or Seasonic SS-860XP2.

While I have suggested slightly different parts from those in the video I think you will find that assembly will be very similar.

All of the parts are available from Newegg, although at a slightly higher total (+~$150).

I personally do not get extended warranties on most components. My reasoning is that should a part fail after its warranty period a suitable replacement is usually available at a lower cost than the original and/or with more power and features. If the parts are being shipped internationally you would have to check if extended warranty coverage would be honored.

thank you, i was going to ask about, does the k4000 supports 2 hdmi screens? but i just found out that it does support them.

as for the fans, i want to remove the fans that came with the case and put quality products. in your opinion how many fans can do the job? beside the 2 fans on the CPU.

thanks again.

There are different models of the K4000 distinguished by the different interfaces. The one I suggested has two Display Port and one DVI-I DL connector. One can run HDMI using a DP to HDMI cable. I believe the two PA monitors can be daisy chained from the one DP port.

Two intake fans and one exhaust would likely be sufficient. The exhaust would be on the rear of the case and the cpu cooler would be mounted and configured so that its fan directs air towards the exhaust. The intakes would be mounted on the lower front. When one buys a quality case, generally the fans are of similar quality. Fans in the Obsidan 750D are Corsair AF140L.
