So my uncle works for a large engineering company and one of his documents went corrupt that will cost him his job and his company a ton of money. The document when opened contains only squares and a few words here and there. Recovery the document didnt work, changing the font didnt work, saving it as a txt and rft didnt work all five squares or different sorts of symbols. If anyone has any information please do help!

Is it opening in the right version of word? For example a docx file in word 2003 or something where it's not supported?

If not, what the other guys said. The company should back up their files.

No i have the file it has headers and various parts mixed in with squares. Its not a back up issue what happened is he was working from home and he hates his keyboard on his laptop so he sent it to his wifes computer and did it then when he was done he sent it back to his when he sent it it corrupted on both pcs.i believe what happened was probably a windows office change corrupted it when he saved it on his wifes pc. Either way we need a way to fix this. The reason his job is at stake is much more complex than this but pretty much alot of money is ridding on this proposal being done. If anyone has anyway to fix this please help.

If you are lucky you might be able to restore to a earlier version of the file. try following this guide: http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/word-help/recover-an-earlier-version-of-an-office-file-HA010356735.aspx

Maybe send it back to his wives pc see if it still opens correctly on hers.. And if so save again and check to see you save it as a file any version of word can open..

unfortunately the corruption on the wifes pc ended up full on deleting the doc. at this point we either need some form of hex edit to recovery the word or program but all programs to do this are expensive and mostly dont work.

Try repairing the file with Word. http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/word-help/save-and-recover-a-backup-copy-of-a-document-HA010121250.aspx (It's somewhwhere on here)

Have you checked if there is a backup file in the folder he saved the document in. This is done through Word's ´Open´ option. You just have to select the path which the original document was saved to, and chose to see all files.

This is a prime example of why business storage need redundancy in the form of both full backups periodically and versioning of files.

I have no idea of the company it structure but they might have one or the other. if so a older copy can  be obtained.  Failing that i would start looking for instances of where copy's were maid.  possibly it was emailed or send to printer with a memory.  was it printed to a hard copy it could be scanned back in and text coped out ect.

the document on the wife's pc may be in the recycling bin.   how was it sent between pc's?
