microsoft has rds for this, allows easy creation of remote desktops and shared folders., but it won't be cheap and easy to setup.

Have you looked at next cloud, easy way to make a shared folder across systems over the internet

I want  to build a server with multiple windows system in it so that my 7 friends can use it + all data they save it gets saved in a particular folder/disk by which everyone can access.

If I am not clear please tell, I will tell you more.

You could use a set of Virtual machines on the server however it may be hard to set everything up. Linus actually made 3 series of videos where he does something. I forgot the first one but the second one is like 8 gamers 1 cpu, and the most recent one is like 6 editors 1 pc and it came out just a couple days ago. There are ways to allocate specific drives or a certain portion of a drive to each of the VMs so they will have the folders. I personally use VMware for my virtual machines, however i don't know if it will be the best solution because I only ever had 1 vm running at a time. There are many different virtual machine programs out there.

Okay. watched that videos too but all the PCs in that video were connected via LAN.

If you connect monitors and peripherals to the server then you could set each VM to use a specific set of peripherals. And theres only one PC in the videos so I am a little confused about what you are saying.

what do you want the users to do? what programs?

You can automount a network folder and have people save stuff on the share. Or you can do redir users, but thats a bit more complex

Sounds like you just need a PC with a folder shared to the network. Then anyone on the network can save files to and access files in that folder.

We want to do programming and save all data in a folder/drive or so. But my friends want to do it remotely like a remote desktop.

If all you need to do it have a central store for your files, you really don't need a remote desktop solution. Licensing alone will cost you over $1000 with a Windows Server Standard 2016 license and 8 RDS user CALs.

You also need knowledge about Windows Server, Active Directory and RDS.

Why not just use Google drive or whatever?

If you want to just code from the same source then you just need a code repository server. Just use github or something similar, its totally free and lets multiple people work together on the same program.

Setting up VM's just to share the same code is very overkill and wasteful, you'll have to buy 7 windows licenses and whatnot. I'm pretty sure your friends already have computers with (hopefully) valid licenses to use.

You will need a powerful computer to run 7 vm's, even with free software like proxmox you still need a lot of hardware.

Accessing a remote desktop over the internet is slow and gross unless you all have gigabit fiber at home.

if you are using visual studio Microsoft already has some free cloud based code sharing tools that comes with it as well.
