The 8700 is not worth the money considering the Ryzen 5 3600 performs the same, uses less power and runs cooler AND as is much cheaper. In addition, the 3700X costs the same and performance forms about 40% better than the i7.

i'm not sure about amd, i've had problems with their graphics cards before. I saw that the store also has a i7 9700 non k for the same price as the 8700

GPUs have no connection to their CPUs. There is a very good reason and have gained massive amounts of market share with Ryzen. Zen 2 is a more advanced product.

hmm, i'll look into it a bit more and consider it, but if i choose to go intel instead, which one should i go for? 8700 or 9700, both are non k and the same price basically

Whichever allows you to get a good cooler. The i7s run hot.

Generally, the 3700X matches them in games and annihilates them in everything else so I can't really recommend the i7s personally.

They don't run hot at stock settings as long as you don't have MCE enabled. The Hyper 212 in his list would be fine if he decided to go with an Intel i7 8700.

That's only if they comply with their 65W spec - the Z-series board allows them to run beyond that pretty much constantly.

You still don't need a cooler like you would if you had an unlocked 8700K. A cooler like the Hyper 212 or Cryorig H7 will be fine.

Handles an i7 7700K at 4.5GHz pretty well:

My own 8700-based machine has issues when using the Freezer 33 Esports. A friend who has the 9700 using the 212 also has complaints with thermals in the 80s when rendering.

The 8700 can hit 100c before it reaches TJ Max. Then it will start to throttle. Anything in the 80's is more than acceptable, especially if doing rendering which is/can be cpu intensive.

Anyway this debate is somewhat irrelevant, as the op should be going with a Ryzen cpu anyway ?

i'm unsure what to pick now, i edit videos a couple of times per week but mostly game on my machine. I want over 144fps at 1080p and being able to play new releases on high/ultra

An R5 3600 would give you the same 6 cores/12 threads as the 8700 but you would have an upgrade path in the future.

What speed ram and motherboard would you recommend for a 3600?

A 3000 - 3200 kit would be fine (Or 3600 if you can get it for the same price). For the board I would say something like a Gigabyte X570 Gaming X or Asus Prime X570-P as a decent entry level board. You can go with a B450 board, but some people have had issues updating the bios. An X570 will work out of the box.

Hmm, i'm still not sure on AMD, only 70€ price difference. Any other reasons than price that i should go with Ryzen?

the reason that with Intel you have to buy a 60 dollar cooler minimum while with the Ryzen you can stay with the stock cooler

If you're looking at their Ryzen 7 3700X:

Less heat

Faster overall speed

Less power needed

Unlocked

Better upgrade path
