Looking for a backup solution

Bruno_A

Hi, I had a bad case of data loss, a while ago, where I lost lots of important, irreplaceable data. I am now paying for an Office 365 Business Essentials subscription, so I can use my own domain name with Microsoft Exchange servers, and it includes 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage, which I intend to store my backups on. OneDrive has a file size limit of 15GB, so, I will need a good and reliable backup solution that backs up all my files, apps, etc. in multiple files, rather than a massive file, which is basically a clone of your hard drive, such as the way Windows Backup does it. I need this backup solution to work as a clone, or system image, so that I can restore a blank drive with my backup, in case of drive failure, for example. Any ideas? I can also use Windows Backup, to store on another hard drive, off-site. Is Windows Backup reliable enough, or, does it meet my requirements?

Many thanks, Bruno.

Hi Bruno,

Idd sugest https://www.paragon-software.com/de/free/br-free/ maybe the payed version, depending on your needs. I guess the free version will be enough though. I use it and store everything on a NAS, but it also should work with OneDrive. You can set the imaging to save in chunks of 14GB to be save with the filesize limit.

Onedrive has a built in backup/sync option that will automatically take over your documents/desktop and pictures folders. It will then auto sync them to the cloud with multiple versions and retention policies etc if you configured for it.

Just open the onedrive app, go to settings and you should see a "backup" tab at the top. Select the folders you want to monitor and press ok.

I use Nova Backup.  My data is automatically backed up twice daily to an second HDD on my PC and directly to my Amazon Cloud site.  I do weekly backups to an external hard drive that can be stored in a different location.   It also has a utility that creates a weekly clone of my SSD OS drive to the backup HDD.  I've not had a system drive fail but it's always good to be safe.  I have 3 PCs on the home network and I think I pay a yearly price of $30 for the software license.  the price for Amazon Web Storage is about $3/month.

Workstation PC Specs: CPU - i7 8700K; MoBo - ASUS TUF Z390; RAM - 32GB Crucial; GPU - Gigabyte RTX 1660 Super; PSU - SeaSonic Focus GX 650; Storage - 500GB Samsung EVO, 3x2TB WD HDD;  Case - Fractal Designs R6; OS - Win10

I use Facebook to backup my pics, as they guarantee to never ever ever delete my pics even if I ask them to :)

I'm a fan of backblaze, i've been using them for a few years now and they offer all the options you are looking for, including file version backup. You can access single files that have been backed up or have them send you a whole new HDD with all your data on it, plus the consumer version has no backup limit.

I used them for a while, but I just want to be 10000% percent sure to have every bit for myself and not on some server (even when its encrypted)

My NAS runs Unraid

I do agree with you, i'm in the same boat, I'm actually moving away from back blaze as the consumer version does not like unraid. I am instead switching to a VM running on a friend server on the other side of the city....but if you don't want to do that, Backblaze is still a good middle of the road option.

Thanks a lot, I'll have a look at that. As a temporary solution, I use a spare SSD to clone my laptop SSD onto it, and use it as a backup, but that's not a great solution, as it would be a bit inconvenient to clone the drive every week, or so.

That sounds like a good solution. I like the fact that you can schedule drive clones, which is something I could use.
