Almost ready to drive down to my local Micro Center (Irvine, California) to upgrade my current ITX build.

Use case is 95% gaming and 5% Photoshop work. I will be reusing everything else: 27" MSI G27C2 display, GTX 1080 mini, G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, m.2 NVMe drive, other storage, ITX case, CPU cooler, etc. ITX form factor is a requirement and since it's Micro Center I get bundled discounts ($30 for Intel, $50 for AMD) that are going to be difficult to beat anywhere else. I'm open to options if you can find something comparable within this price range (~$400 USD all-in).

I'm leaning toward the i7-9700 build for its value in raw 1080P gaming performance (I realize this chart has a 9700K, but it should be relatively close). But which would you recommend for this use case, and why?

  2. AMD Ryzen 7 3700X + ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac (AM4) - $389.98 before tax

Going off this list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d9_E3h8bLp-TXr-0zTJFqqVxdCR9daIVNyMatydkpFA/htmlview?sle=true#gid=639584818

That B450 mobo should support a 3700X easily, and even for slightly more than the 9700 I think it's a lot better value. Slightly better IPC if I'm remembering rightly, and 8c/16t vs 8c/8t. Likely has the better stock cooler too.

Went down to Micro Center and scooped up the 3700X + ASRock B450 Fatal1ty ITX combo, but have to wait for my AMD bootkit to flash the BIOS... it shipped with a BIOS that immediately precedes the Ryzen 3000 microcode update. I expected this, and was not in a rush anyway.

What I didn't expect was for the locking lever on the Wraith Prism to sheer off completely. My gut told me something was wrong with it and kept reseating the cooler, but nothing I could do would get it to budge... until it snapped right off. Going back to get an exchange today... ?
