Overclocking my 3700x

Hey guys, I just bought a 3700x and PBO does not seem to work well... it takes the cpu way high in voltage, and I immediately needed to changed it. So I changed to 4300mhz and a voltage of 1.325. It works well, but the temps even in iddle are between 45ºc and 50ºc.

Is it normal?

What have you tried? Do you have some advices?

My specs:

I have almost the same setup ; 3700x with a meg ACE ( so MSI too ), 64GB of 3600 / CL17 Trident Z non-RGB, but with a 2080ti.

I've lowered voltage to the same amount and I'm also getting around 50°C in idle, with a noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 ( only one fan, temporary measure ). Same cpu frequency, too.

I read that the default voltage was indeed quite stupid ( 1.5 ) and very much unneeded... I was also intrigued at the temperature value, though I expect it to drop a bit when I reattach the second fan.

So yeah you're not alone, though I can't tell if it's normal :o

An auxiliary question if I may ? Does your ram work well ? I can't for the life of me XMP or manually put it to it's actual 3600mhz value. I even tried 3200, it just won't POST. :/ Since we've got almost the same... CL17 isn't in the Memory Try-it! list but it doesn't hurt asking!

That's pretty good. I overclocked mine to 4.3 as well at 1.38v and haven't had any issues yet. PBO/Auto OC also does nothing special for me..

And how are your temps? :S

I have done some testing with PBO on my 3600 and it isn't impressing me either. I get about the same performance and it runs hotter lol. In R15 stock I get 1625 in the multi test and 197 in the single core test with max temps at 67c. With pbo enabled I get 1624 in multi and 200 in single but my temps go up to 72c. With PBO core speed maxes at 4.1 in multi thread and will boost to pretty close to 4.4 in single thread, but as you can see the performance didn't change much. I also ran some game benchmarks like time spy, fire strike and superposition. My scores actually went down with PBO enabled lol. Not by much though so it might have been in the margin of error and just didn't make a difference at all.

I also did an all core overclock to 4.2 ghz and R15 was 1668 multi and 198 single at 69c. Time spy and stuff went up slightly because of the increased cpu score but not what I would call a lot. I will probably just drop it back down to stock settings since it doesn't really seem to effect anything I am doing with the computer. I would rather have it run more efficient and a bit cooler then get that extra tiny bit of performance. I noticed that with PBO on or with an overclock that as soon as I do anything other than sit at idle the temps jump to almost 70. Its like its either at ilde, or full on, no inbetween. If I leave it at stock it only gets near 70c under a full load like cinabench multi core testing. Most other stuff it only warms up to around 50 or 60c and idles at around 35c. IF the ambient temp is reasonable. I live in an attic in Michigan. Last week the temps in this room were above 95 degrees at 56 percent humidity. The last few days its been mid to high 70s to low 80s and all my scores and temps changed so I had to throw the old test data out lol. I was kind of pissed because I just bought a h100i pro water cooler and my temps were still in the mid 70c range under a load. I was like "man this thing isn't much better than my 40 dollar generic air cooler.".  Turns out not many coolers work that great with ambient temps near 100F lol. It was actually running slightly cooler than ambient at idle.

Sorry for pulling you guys again to this topic... I think I found some good settings, so... I was trying to tweek my voltage and I was able to set 4300mhz at 1.3v, the temps went down 10ºC... WOW

Today when I booted the coputer at 1.325v it was on iddle at 50º-52º now, I'm on 40º-42º. :D

I'm so much happier now! Hope it helps. Lower than that... windows wont boot (at least for me)... also, at 1.3v my C15 score went up... lol

Try my settings mate... Imo, you wont notice that much difference between 4.3 and 4.4... that worth the added voltage.

hummm okey... I only OCed mine coz PBO sucks so hard... and it scared me with the voltages. I fell much safer now with 1.3v @ 4300mhz... temps are fine, perf is super fine... im good :P
