I have a HP xw8400 I would like to turn into a media server. I currently do not have any storage for it however and I have a $400 budget. I am planning on buying 2 Toshiba x300s, for redundancy and buying a small ssd for the operating system. Is there anywhere I can find a guide to set it up?

Then in ubuntu id use zfs on the drives to run raid 1.

Note 1: If you keep an eye out, those 8TB ones will go down to $125 occasionally.

Note 2: In order to use these in a normal (read: not server environment) computer, you'll need to work around the PWDIS function.

 

Other than that, I'll vouch for using externals, seeing as I have seven in various places (all WD EasyStore/Elements).

Installing ZFS and setting up SAMBA isn't overly complicated. You can have it online in under an hour once you learn how.
