the new Ryzen 5 3600 which is the lowest end chip in the new Ryzen line is literally an i7-8700k, which is MUCH better than the i7-4790K. the Ryzen 3700X/3800X/3900X will be a HUGE increase in performance. So yes, it is well worth the upgrade.

     Basic question. Can I finally step into the DDR4 world with the new Ryzen CPU's? Still rocking the old i7 4790K with DDR3... Most everything before this launch was barely an upgrade and not worth it. Minimal gains from what I read.

Could still take another GPU upgrade before the CPU really gets too weak (from R9 Fury if I've not mistaken) since you're at 1440p

Only upgrade if your performance doesn't meet your standards, simple as that. If your current CPU does everything you need, Ryzen won't make a difference.

 

I'd still be using my 4790k if I didn't win my 8086K.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Vega 56. I ditched that Fury 2 weeks after installing! What a nightmare that ASUS card was!

u may still be able to go for a vega 64 before upgrading your cpu. but more than that it will probably start to bottleneck. And yes, if the pc still fits your uses just keep it.

I updated my prifile and parts list. Snagged an XFX Vega 56 for 280.00 black Friday 2018. Redid my cases and went full RGBtard with the Corsair ecosystem but my RAM sticks are still boring plain DDR3. Sure everythign works fine with the games I play but as an old PC hardware junkie I would like to upgrade this year or in 2020 at some point.

Nah that's makes next to no difference. V64's advantage over V56 is mostly on computing, not gaming.

what happened to that? I doubt it's the cooler, since that's basically the same stuff on the 980ti

 

R5 3600 isn't a bad idea, only really need more cores when you do more than gaming.

It really depends on what your needs are. You have that 4790k overclocked? Are you playing games on a 60hz monitor with a mid range vid card @ 1080p??? If you are don't bother.  However, new shiny new computers are fun lol....sometimes people upgrade because they want to and not because they absolutely need to. I would be hypocritical to not at least say that last sentence since I bought two new ryzen systems last week. It was more want than need :)
