PC No Boot/POST

Go to solution Solved by jfd492,

ended up being the cpu that failed, got a replacement from intel and it started right up. Thanks everyone for the help

Hello everyone,
I've just started having a problem with my first custom built computer.
Everything is about 2 months old.

It seems the problem started when i bumped my computer. I was in the
middle of an adobe update download and it restarted. It did this a few
times and then it shut down. When i went to power it back on, it will not
boot up anymore, there's no display on the monitor, and there is no POST
beep from the case speaker. It was working fine until now, temps never
went over 60 degrees. No overclocking has been done. All the fans are spinning.

The motherboard is showing some debug led error codes D0 and others. I have

tried booting from both the main BIOS and back up BIOS, I also tried clearing the CMOS
and removing the battery but the problem is still the same. I do not
know the BIOS version and cannot check or update it because the computer
will not boot or go into BIOS. As far as I know all the software was up
to date.

In my attempt to diagnose the problem, i removed the entire motherboard
out of the case. I checked for shorts, i didn't find any. I removed the
cpu, checked the pins, and reseated it. I removed all connections from
the board (drives, memory, graphics card etc.) except the cpu and main
power. When powered on with no memory, the board beeps continuously and
then restarts and repeats. Does this rule out the memory motherboard and
cpu? I was going to check the psu but I don't have my dmm at the moment.

What went wrong and why? How can I fix my problem? I just don't
understand why it's doing this all of a sudden. It's really frustrating
because everything is new and when I built it, it started up first time,
no problem.

If it will help I will post pics or try to take a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylywp-Bj9UA&feature=youtu.be Let me know
Thank you, I'm grateful for any help.

Man that sucks... it might be the power supply that's problematic since you say it doesn't bleep and the display doesn't turn on... try to power up the PSU using a paper clip as explained in video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0OKmIuNtmI) If that still doesn't work, try to check if your PSU power button is switched on... you never know haha, something we forget to think about the simple basic stuff.

Obviously everything I stated above is invalid if you hear the fans spin up etc..

Okay so i was going to go and check the other codes today, but it looks like things have only gotten worse.

Now it will not turn on, it just keeps reseting, no codes, no beeps.

The mb is out of the case, only things connected are cpu and power.

Here's a video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylywp-Bj9UA&feature=youtu.be

Not sure what happened or what changed, but yesterday when i powered it on with no ram it would beep continuously.

Then i tried connecting the ssd and hdd. Still no boot or beeps. Then the graphics card, same thing, but different code.

I'm not sure but i think it could've been E0 or D3

Yep, the fans were spinning, leds lit, bluray drive funtional, but other than that... nothing.

But now it's just reseting over and over again, no codes or beeps.

I do plan to check the power supply though.

Question: i have spare old psus (about 200W to 300W), but they have 4 pin cpu power connectors, not 8 pin like my motherboard.

Can i use them to power the mobo or will it not work because it's a 4 pin?

Note - tried the paper clip connection and the psu does turn on and the fan spins

PSU can't be the cause from what you've just explained, Basically now, what you have to do is eliminate components one by one (hard drive, ssd, cpu heatsink, and blu-ray player are obviously not at fault for your problems..)

So that leaves the blame to the CPU, motherboard, memory, or graphics card.

For the graphics card it's very simple to see if it's the one causing problems because you can just remove it from the pci-e slot and remove the power for it, and then run your computer from the integrated gpu instead (hook up your monitor dvi cable to your motherboard instead of your gpu)

For the memory, only way to know is by installing another stick of memory from some other kit. Maybe borrow a stick of memory from a friend's desktop for a couple of hours?

CPU is really hard to diagnose, and I highly doubt there is anything wrong with it.

As for the motherboard, try to test the setup outside the case once again on a wooden table or other non conductive surface, with just the minimum (psu, motherboard, memory, cpu and cpu cooler)

One of these solutions should hopefully help you point the finger at a particular component and get it repaired or replaced.

Open it up. Make sure everything is connected properly and all connections are fully seated. Wiggle the RAM sticks in their slots. Make sure the video card is fully seated.

And most importantly, use the on-board jumper to reset the BIOS/CMOS.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

Been testing out of the case, using the motherboard box. RAM installed/unistalled does't change anything

To reset the CMOS there is a dedicated switch on the motherboard that i've tried many times. Even removed the 3V battery for a day

So that leaves the blame to the CPU, motherboard, memory, or graphics card.

I've been using the onboard graphics. Memory and gpu installed or unistalled doesn't change anything.

Still stuck in the same resetting loop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylywp-Bj9UA&feature=youtu.be

Right now i'm suspecting the motherboard, i don't know what else could be wrong. From what i've read cpu failures are very rare and unlikely.

I've also read about flashing the BIOS though. Is this somehing i should try? Could it help the situation? Will it void my warranty?

CPU failures are rare, bent pins are not. You might take of the cpu cooler and very gently and carefully lift the cpu to examine the socket pins. You should check to see if there is any foreign matter on the underside of the chip and or in the socket as well.
