Hello everyone!

I can´t find anything related, and I'm not totally sure it belongs here, my apologies if thats the case.

 

It happends that I was able to get really cheap 2 ssds 240gb each, since I'm focusing in storage and speed I though "why not a raid 0?". Well I don't know why Iam getting mostly the same speed from single ssd than from the raid.

What Iam doing wrong?

Micron ssd

Raid is being built with windows.

Sadly not enough info; what kind of motherboard/cpu are you using? You may simply be running into limits for your SATA controller especially in the case of Sata1 or Sata2.

Also what speeds do you see, if they are somewhat close to 300MB/s i'd start looking towards SATA limits again.

Based on the product info page of Gigabyte your motherboard should also have a Sata3 controller for the first 2 ports; i'd suggest to start out with trying to see if you can use those instead for the SSD's and if that gives any difference thus far assuming the SSD's are compatible SATA3(6Gb/s.)

A caveat that may be worth noting is that some SATA controllers mention the full speed of the full controller/bus; this means in some cases that the total bandwidth (300MB/s or 600MB/s) may shared among the devices connected. Also note that for some controllers connecting a Sata2 device to one of more shared SATA3 ports may end up forcing the whole set of ports to run at SATA2 (mostly ran into this with server backplanes, I can't recall wether i actually ran into something like that for a more regular setup, but it may be worth mentioning in case it would turn out to be the case :)).

That was something i was thinking of to be honest... I'm planning to upgrade but you know... money.

 

Will a pciexpress sata card will help right?

If it comes to SATA expansion boards the options are far and wide, but it may be worth the effort to check benchmarks/statistics of the model you're planning to buy.
Over the years i've ran into plenty of cards which ended up performing sub-par either because of a slow controller being used (these were generally the cheapest cards by no coincidence) or for some cases PCIe lanes being too limited. (Mainly when trying to add SATA2 to systems with only PCIE v1)
At first glance however i'd like to expect PCIE3.0 x4 to not give much issue.

In the past I've personally had good experiences with some HighPoint RocketRaid cards (although Sata2 versions) for where I mainly relied on JBOD or software-raid (especially for some of the cheaper cards the onboard features may be somewhat limited).

If at all possible it might be best to try and tie the SSD's directly to the motherboard: I'd rather expect IO limitations on SSD's connected through a disk controller then when using Hard Disks on the extra controller :) so in that sense when using HDD's connected to it i'd expect one to be able to get away with a less solid controller / have less risk of a lack of performance :)

Thanks dude! I'm going to follow your advice and check some benchmarks of the cards and make a decision.

Hello mister Annihlator!

Against your advice i bought a cheappy sata card (this one Syba SI-PEX40064 4 Port SATA III PCI-e 2.0 x1 http://www.sybausa.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=156&search=SI-PEX40064)

 

I'm pretty happy with it for my objetive, but it has its limitations.

Seems that is just 1 sata lane, because no matter how many disks I add to the raid or if its just one disk I'm only getting 400mb/sec of reading as max (I didn't bother to go through all the test since I'm interested in just measure the performance of the link)

 

It was less than 30$ so no complains, and Iam getting close twice as fast as before (and more ports)

 

Also you gave me an idea to expand my media center and I bought a 4 sas card (this one not so crappy) so you are my hero now!
