Raspberry Pi Gameboy Guide?

I've entertained the idea of a raspberry pi gameboy to play all my old games I owned but either broke and threw away (I was a kid at the time) or simply no longer work. Plus I'd like to play some games you can either no longer buy or are rare and therefore their pricing is sky high and not affordable. With that being said I've never undertaken a task like this before, never soldered, you get the point, but I'm willing to learn. I've asked around, joined groups and asked and I pretty much either get little to no responses or I get treated as if I've done this when specifying that I haven't. From what I have read it is quite confusing and haven't been hugely detailed in a way for a complete beginner. I was hoping that there was a guide explaining what I need, how to put it together and then the software side of things. I'd honestly greatly appreciate some support here as it'd be wonderful to play some old classics again.

Well, there's quite a few components to consider and a lot of experience working with different software and programming would be necessary. To be quite honest, I think soldering components would be the easiest part. Let's break it down a little bit and try to create a design, perhaps this is something we can drive as a community.

 

First, what do we want? Do we want to basically recreate what it was like to own an actual gameboy, so then we'd hide the Raspberry Pi inside a shell? My guess is yeah, we do. For the externals, we'll need to create a housing based on a number of factors: buttons, screen size, and if we want to use traditional gameboy cartridges.

 

But that part about gameboy cartidges will be the hardest - I don't think we're ready for that quite yet. And you mentioned you wanted this for games you can't play anymore, lol.

 

So, we create a concept design. That means we need to select a display first, then get the appropriate buttons, so we know how we need to design our housing.

 

As you can see, it's going to take a lot, and this is hardly any of the project. Just refer to what @Mbowen linked above and start getting creative and start experimenting.

So you're just trying to design your own? It's been done 1000 times before... basically the only "unique" part of the process now is the PCB and custom form factor designs. Raspberry pi just released their R-Pi 4 and so far they don't have their compute stick out yet. 

Check out the Saber Sword kit for the Pi Gameboy. Basically an entirely custom PCB with everything on it. If you designed something like that it would be pretty neat and the launch of R-Pi 4.0 kind of calls for it if their compute stick isn't backwards compatible. 

Otherwise I really don't see the point of your project...

I don't think you understand what I was saying in my post lol. I was just giving a really basic outline of what he needs to do - a guide on just this whole thing could be hard to find. You responded as I was typing, so I just threw your name in there. He could experiment with making different housings, using different buttons, etc

I may or may not have read fast and though you were OP trying to custom design the project from the ground up... Sorry lol. 

But yeah, that link has literally everything from Li-Ion/Poly batteries to custom power supplies and PCBs. There is a whole community in that link so I would suggest OP start there.

I intend just to use a gameboy case, obviously one modded for raspberry pi. I've read you can just buy custom made cases. I pretty much just want a gameboy that looks like the original. I don't want anything fancy either. I don't not have any experience in terms of putting some things together, I mean I pieced together my PC, my brothers and my other brothers and then a family PC. I've just never soldered wires together nor had to put pieces together like a puzzle of sorts if that makes sense. The actual putting it together doesn't seem too complicated I reckon I could handle that. I would however need a guide telling when was is soldered to what, etc you get the point. I think the hardest part for me and it's because I've not really found many details on it is how I install Retropie and how I go about setting it all up.

Ah I see. So I take it that you've looked at what Mbowen provided?

 

I can at least offer soldering advice - if you intend this to be your only project that uses soldering and you don't have an iron already, you don't need a nice one. However, I recommend at least a 40W iron. And when you're soldering, just make sure to do it in a well ventilated area (as the gases released can be toxic) and you also have a facemask on.

 

The thing with knowing where to solder to what is that you can probably solder most of the buttons to any pin, and get away with modifying it in software later. Well, that's my guess at least. I know you can easily do something like that with Arduino.

 

It looks like there's a LOAD of documentation on retropie. Why don't you get your hands on the stuff you need first and then try setting it up yourself, using the documentation? It may be hard to follow, but there is a forum site, so if you encounter any issues, just look/post there.

Retro Pi will play the games. However, getting the ROM's is something we cant help you with. You will have to figure that part on your own.

I know about the ROM's wasn't asking for help on that because of the legality. I know about Retropie as well, however you need to build the system or buy one made, because as I understand it Retropie is a software.

I can at least offer soldering advice - if you intend this to be your only project that uses soldering and you don't have an iron already, you don't need a nice one. However, I recommend at least a 40W iron. And when you're soldering, just make sure to do it in a well ventilated area (as the gases released can be toxic) and you also have a facemask on.

 

The thing with knowing where to solder to what is that you can probably solder most of the buttons to any pin, and get away with modifying it in software later. Well, that's my guess at least. I know you can easily do something like that with Arduino.

 

It looks like there's a LOAD of documentation on retropie. Why don't you get your hands on the stuff you need first and then try setting it up yourself, using the documentation? It may be hard to follow, but there is a forum site, so if you encounter any issues, just look/post there.

Alright, just gave it a look by searching the site. The Gameboy Advance one did have open source files but now 404 and the gameboy emulation one doesn't have a guide listed in text* or through a link but there was an embedded YouTube video that has either been deleted or striked. @BuckGup Appreciate the help though.

I have no idea why people should use a raspberry pi for gba, when a 10 yrs old nokia phone could run it perfectly...

It's got nothing to do with whether raspberry pi can run it or not but everything to do with emulating. A Nokia may be able to play a gameboy game but where have you seen an old Nokia run a gameboy game? Exactly, you haven't. I have however seen raspberry pi's emulate old gameboy games. @dgsddfgdfhgs

I have set Retropie up quite a few times, and it's really simple to do :)

 

Once you have that working on an RPi plugged in to a TV/monitor, then you can have a look at how to make it fit the form factor that you are wanting - this is where the forum linked above, or one of the many results for the google search of "raspberry pi gameboy" will help.

 

Any specific struggles, shout on here and I'll help you where I can.
