pc wont recognize graphic card.

orze

my brother wanted to get a laptop so we wanted to put is pc for sale.

it was only running a i5 3570k

so i went online and got a r9 290 for preety cheap 80$

thing was shown to me as it works and reason it was cheap was 2 busted fans out of the 3.

easy fix really and i allready got 3 new fans that fit this model on there way

thing is this pc wont recognise this gpu..

i tried puting my own 1080 in this pc and it worked fine and then put the 290 in my own rig and that worked fine just as well

so the r9 290 is just not recognised by that pc and i mean notin. only fan spin the pc wont even recognise something is in that slot........any idea why?

cpu: 5950x

mobo: asus tuf pro x570

gpu: 3090 FE

ram: 32gb G.SKILL Trident Z 3200 c14

psu: Antec HCP1300w Platinum (overkill i know...got it for a good price)

thats all needed right?...i didnt study for this exam....

it could be due to the cpu

try re-seating it

i had a dell that had ram slots that wouldn't work cause the cpu was not in properly

What kind of motherboard are you running? As this is a budget build, I believe it would be possible you are running a 2nd gen chipset right? It would fit your CPU...

We have a friend in Canada that has a i7-2600 (plain) build and he ran into a similar issue. Basically, if you are running an OLD motherboard (and this is pretty much just OEM) sometimes they won't be able to recognize the BIOS format on the GPU. Therefor, it won't work.

I would check your display adapter driver in Device manager and see if it is giving you any error codes. He had one that shot off about not being able to allocate resources. Though that didn't turn out to be correct. (Strictly speaking)

Also, DO NOT reseat the CPU, the machine wouldn't work pretty much at all if that was the cause and you would probably see other issues before the GPU problems.

Depends on the bios type on the card. I would suggest checking the device manager for driver errors anyways though. Always a great place to start.

Same thing happened to me once, I updated the BIOS on my motherboard and then it worked. I would recommend trying that.

Was the PSU the same when you did your check? It's entirely possible that the card isn't getting the right amount of power. If you tried the 1080 and it took more cables then you may have been able to power the 1080 with less than it needs to run games but enough to register in Device manager.

Check the PSU cables and try to swap them.

(Check the PCI slots too)

i gave my guess so i chacked abit more then just startup with my 1080

also its a 730w psu....and a ok 1 at that. 80 plus bronze from rosewell.

so it should be able to run this r9 no problem.

a thing i found wierd is in system config under mb pcie config i see "x0" under pciex16_1

not sure if it means it thinks it got no pcie slots of the video card is just not recofnized here either.

x0 refers to the amount of lanes being used from that slot. (I dove really deep into this in the past)

Yes, your Rosewill 730w should be able to handle it no problem. It's a question of whether or not the rails on your 6+2 pin connectors are healthy and giving off the right amount of power. That's why I suggested swapping them.

Just remember that just because the 1080 ran fine doesn't meant that the 290 will. The 290 takes 275w while the 1080 takes only about 180w. That could make all the difference.

Does it still work in the other motherboard? No changes there?

Also, you tried it on a different PCI slot right?

What GPU was your brother's computer running with BEFORE the R9-290 swap?

nVidia + AMD drivers/hardware together does not mix.

You need to COMPLETELY remove the nVidia drivers (e.g. uninstall then use DDU) before trying the R9-290.

A few years ago, I had bought a GTX 760 for a friend, and decided to test it in my system before handing it over to them. At the time, I was running AMD Radeon HD 7970's (aka R9-280X) in Crossfire. I had no issues uninstalling the AMD drivers, reboot, and simply sticking the GTX 760 into the system. When I wanted to put my own AMD cards back in, the system did not boot up properly. It would crash, and bug out. Turns out, bits of leftover nVidia driver files were causing the issue, even after uninstalling and rebooting the PC. I had to use DDU.

What is the specific model "730W" Rosewill PSU?

Are you using TWO separate PCI-E 6 / 8 pin power cables for the R9-290, or using a single cable with daisy-chain PCI-E connections?

E.g. This...or two separate cables?
