Imagine if Nvidia gave Linus a few Tesla V100's to test out.

The Nvidia Tesla V100 costs roughly $10'000 USD but if placed in the correct system with the CPU not bottlenecking its performance. It is THE Fastest GPU. Unfortunately you don't see many of these reviewed so it'd be quite nice if Linus actually reviewed this and attempted to make the bench PC run extremely fast with this GPU on it. 

 

The reason its so powerful and expensive? 

 

Its made for servers where this GPU would be taking in all of the workloads of the Remote desktops that are connected to VM's on the server. Its quite a good idea and i've tested this on the google cloud platform VM with this GPU and got between 500-650 FPS (dependent on location and map) at a stable rate.

V100 Doesn't have display outputs.

Even if it did, all the drivers are set-up for workstation programs and not games.

Tesla drivers are specifically designed for compute tasks, they do not game very well, especially when you need to use a passthrough for video output because I'm pretty sure the only teslas with a video output were the C2050 and C2070 from first gen Fermi.

I'm sure those cards would be completely unrivaled for compute tasks, but their gaming performance will be incredibly mediocre.

 

You can use Quadro cards with a "hacked" GeForce drivers and get "normal" performance. So dual boot with different graphics driver is an option for someone sitting on a workstation with Quadro card.

 

Question is if you can do something similar with V100.

I use a Quadro P4000 for mixed use (90%+ work / 10% Gaming) and have had no problems gaming with the standard Nvidia drivers installed.

Solid 60 FPS in GTAV and Doom(2016) with all the settings turned up.

If Linus wanted to get a Tesla, he absolutely could. Honestly surprised he hasn't. Maybe just no ideas on what videos to do with it.

NVIDIA doesn't like it when Linus uses compute GPU for gaming and this is totally what he would do (if he got around the display output obstacle).

 

Imagine your 10k GPU being shown as barely better (if at all) in gaming as a 1k GPU. Sure, it's not meant to be used like that but no one wants that at NVIDIA.

The lack of display output you can get around but you do have a point that V100 don't have a consumer counterpart, yet anyway.
