I need help

This is a 2 parter:

1. Ok so i think my motherboard is getting old and about to kick the bucket and i need a new one, but i dont know how to tell which one i need, I will have a list of my specs below with my needs for a new motherboard.

2. I want to liquid cool my CPU but dont know what size i need for the proccessor, i was thinking about the Corsair Hydro Series h100i v2, but dont know what size i need

Here are my specs to the best of my knowledge (this is a prebuild that i plan/am upgrading)

i7-7700k 8 core @3.6ghz

16GB of XPG DDR4 ram 2400mhz i think

MSI GTX 1060 3gb

Here is what i would like to see for the motherboard:

at least 4 ram slots

sli capability *FOR THE FUTURE* im aware you cant sli 1060s

up to 64gb of ram capabillity

Anyhelp/tips would be great,

NOTE: My MAIN CONCERN is a motherboard, its something i need like fast,

Your motherboard parameters are odd.

SLI?  You can't SLI GTX1060's.

64 - 128 GB of RAM?  No mainstream board for the 7700K can support 128GB.  Why do you even need that with such a weak system (relatively compared to needing 128GB RAM).  If you need 128GB of RAM, you need a lot more than a 7700k and a 1060 3GB.

Just grab a decent Z270 board and OC the 7700K and enjoy life.

Your motherboard is not old if its for a 7700k. For a liquid cooler, a h100i would be plenty to cool it. And as said, you can't SLI 1060s unless you were wanting to upgrade your GPU setup too, and 64-128GB of RAM is probably WAY overkill for anything you could possibly be doing with a 7700k. Even 32GB would probably be overkill.

I know this is a weak build, but i plan to upgrade it, i plan to upgrade to i9-8900x i think and dual 1080 tis or 2080s in the future, however i just want to upgrade as i go considering i dont have a good cashflow , but i still want to live up to my hobby of tinkering with pc's, 128gb of ram is not needed but would be a nice feature incase i ever needed/wanted to go that high,

You may want to do some research about all that.

May want to upgrade to 128GB of RAM?  You don't have a use case for the i9, dual 2080's or the 128GB of RAM, do you?

Meaning... you're just spouting off big numbers just for fun.

Use case = what would you use it for?  Are you into Deep Learning?  AI?  Developing Games?  Producing 4K or 8K video editing?

Basically WHY do you want that stuff, cuz from where I sit... you don't know why you want it.

Regardless, either get a good Air Cooler or a 360mm AIO for the 7700K.  Grab any good Z270 motherboard, most should have SLI built in.  They top out at 64GB of RAM, so you're aware.

The 7700k wont be compatible with any Motherboard that would have an upgrade path to be able to effectively use the amount of ram your looking for. IMO grab a non OC capable board for the 7700k and sit it out on base clocks while you gather money for an upgrade to a enthusiast platform if you want to play with the features. With new chips out in a few days some old Enthusiast gear is bound to end up going on sale or up on craigslist.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

As @jstudrawa said boards that support the 7700k can't fit 128gb of ram. if this is really something you are looking to do, then sell the I7, get a threadripper with an x399 motherboard

If your knowledge level is such that you are unaware that a 7700k and 9800x are on different platforms (i.e. there is no motherboard that supports both), then you don't need anywhere close to 128GB of RAM, SLI or a HEDT platform.

Figure out what you actually want to achieve, and do your research before buying anything. In the meantime, go enjoy your system.

im interested in cyber security and use alot of vms on the daily aswell as a long list of applications/tools.  and faster vms are nice but they need more ram etc, so thats why i said that, i dont plan on going to 128 gb of ram anytime soon if at all but 64gb would be very nice and worth the upgrade in my opinion, thats why the ram would benefit me, as for the dual 2080s or 1080s that would be nice but i really only NEED 1 2080 or 1080 etc, i just think having the capabillity of sli would be nice so i dont have to dish out 1k+$ on a new gpu when 1080s are obsolete or just not that good anymore

I would seriously consider waiting on the build to see reviews on the new AMD lineup. From preliminary leaks, they seem to be crushing the Intel HEDT lineup in both single and multithreaded work. IE games and production. Plus you get PCIe 4.0 support so you won't bottleneck any future GPUs.

Intel has so many security flaws it would be in your best interest to walk away if you truly value security.

How many VMs and what kind of applications and tools? Switching to fewer VMs and more containerized setups like Docker could save you a considerable amount of resources while keeping things modular.

I need help. WELL THAT'S A REALLY EYE CATCHING ON A COMMUNITY HELP FORUM. Next time your title should have a very brief description of your problem.

So, coming to your problem.

If your prebuild had an unlocked "K" processor, it must have a motherboard which support overclocking in the first place. So I think you're in no need of upgrading that motherboard.

SLI? It died in 2015 brother when the Pascal cards were introduced.

128GB RAM? What are you trying to build? Nothing will ever need 128GB RAM on a desktop computer. Unless you're like Linus who does 7 gamers 1 CPU lmao.

For VM's, your 7700K is enough. If your motherboard is a Z series then you could look for its bios update for support of 8th gen processors and buy an i7 8700K. Use that 16GB RAM until you actually start running on page files so dont worry about that from the start.

i use like 4-5 vms at a time and i use alot of tools on kali linux, aswell as multiple putty tabs, usually thats whats open the most on my pc, aswell as steam, discord, google chrome and a game if im playing, so usually if i have vmware open while playing games i max out cpu, and ram

And don't forget to mark the topic as solved or end it.

im definitely older than you if you really hopped on a forum to talk shit to people asking for advice, i said i wasnt going to upgrade to 128 gb of ram, i just said if that was a feature in the motherboard, i wouldnt complain

Fair point, but I would figure someone running virtual machines would also worry about architectural security flaws that can't be mitigated.

No, you state that you feel your motherboard is getting old and need a new one.  Then list parameters for said board.

You're talking in circles now, and people are taking their time to help you.  At least slow down and they can address your needs without having to look for some non-existent stuffs.

No, you state that you feel your motherboard is getting old and need a new one.  Then list parameters for said board.

You're talking in circles now, and people are taking their time to help you.  At least slow down and they can address your needs without having to look for some non-existent stuffs.

ok, let me edit the post, this has became a nightmare

so if you're willing to upgrade the processor you could go for z370 with an 8700k. If you want to keep the processor then there are z270 motherboards from like ASUS and MSI but since yours is a prebuilt one their might be issues of clearance and motherboard compatibility with the case...
